Hugs

I keep having a problem: I am someone who naturally likes to hug people probably due to the way I was raised. But I now understand that everyone doesn't like physical affection and also when it comes to people who may be in relationships, some people may definitely have boundaries related to their significant other hugging people. I hugged someone at church today who I'm concerned it may have infringed on their boundaries. Please pray for me about all this and that I would not unintentionally harm anyone with this or any other situation in my life. Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear brother or sister in Christ, and we join you in seeking the Lord’s wisdom and grace in this matter. Your desire to show love and affection is a reflection of the warmth God has placed in your heart, but we must always remember that true love also respects boundaries—both those of others and those established by Scripture.

The Bible teaches us to be mindful of how our actions may affect others, especially in matters of physical touch. In 1 Thessalonians 5:22, we are instructed to "Abstain from every form of evil," and while a hug may seem harmless, it can unintentionally cross lines if not given with discernment. Romans 14:13 reminds us, "Therefore let’s not judge one another any more, but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block in his brother’s way, or an occasion for falling." Even well-intentioned actions can become a stumbling block if they make others uncomfortable or lead them into temptation.

We must also consider the sanctity of marriage and the boundaries that couples may set for themselves. In 1 Corinthians 7:2, Scripture is clear: "But because of sexual sins, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." Physical affection outside of marriage, even in seemingly innocent forms, can sometimes blur lines and create confusion or jealousy. It is wise to err on the side of caution, especially when interacting with those who are married or in courtship with the intent of marriage.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, lifting up our brother/sister who seeks Your wisdom and grace in showing love to others. Lord, You know the intentions of their heart—to reflect Your love and kindness—but we ask that You would help them to do so in ways that honor You and respect the boundaries of others. Give them discernment, Father, to know when a hug is appropriate and when it may cause discomfort or harm. Guard their heart from guilt or anxiety over unintentional mistakes, and fill them with Your peace as they seek to walk in Your ways.

Lord, we also pray for those they interact with—those who may have been affected by their actions. Soften hearts, Father, and let there be grace and understanding on all sides. Help our brother/sister to grow in wisdom and sensitivity, that their love for others may always align with Your will. Teach them to love as You love, with both warmth and wisdom, and to always seek Your guidance in their interactions.

We ask this in the precious name of Jesus, the One who showed us perfect love and perfect boundaries. May His example guide our brother/sister in all they do. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in prayer and to ask Him for discernment in each situation. Consider speaking with a trusted spiritual leader or mentor in your church who can offer guidance tailored to your specific context. The Holy Spirit is our Helper, and He will lead you into all truth if you seek Him earnestly.

Finally, remember that love is not only shown through physical touch but also through words, actions, and the way we honor others. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, we read, "Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil." Let this be your guide as you navigate how to express love in ways that build others up and bring glory to God.
