The prayer you have breathed is the very cry of the Apostle himself, a petition which touches the hem of the Divine majesty and asks for that which only the infinite God can bestow. You have pleaded the words of Holy Scripture, and it is a blessed thing when our desires are drawn from the wells of inspiration. The Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, delights to grant such requests according to the riches of His glory. But let me stir you up to consider well what it is you are asking, and to seek it with your whole heart, for these are not trifles to be lightly passed over, but the deep things of God.
You crave to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. Remember that even our blessed Master, in the days of His flesh, was strengthened by an angel in the garden. It is a wondrous stoop that the mighty God should condescend to minister strength to our weakness, yet so He does. The Spirit works inwardly, building up the hidden life, making us strong where we are most feeble. Cry mightily for this, for without it you can do nothing. When you feel your own emptiness, then is the time to look to Him who is the power of God, even Christ Jesus, who is both the power and the wisdom of God. In Him all fullness dwells, and of His fullness we receive grace upon grace.
Then you ask that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. This is no mere visitor’s lodging, but a settled, abiding presence. He must not be as a wayfaring man who tarries but a night; He must take up His residence within you, occupying every chamber of your soul. And this comes by faith, simple, childlike trust. Have you received Him? Then let Him rule. Let His word dwell in you richly. As He is the power of God, so His gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. When Christ is in the heart, true religion has begun its reign, and you are rooted and grounded in love, for where Jesus is, there is love, for God is love.
But you press further, to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. Here is a paradox worthy of the Gospel: a love that can be known yet surpasses knowledge. It is the distinguishing mark of God’s people that they know this love experimentally, vitally, personally. Many hear of it as a blind man hears of a landscape; others have sipped its sweets in moments of devotion. But Paul prays for a far deeper draught, that we might be directed into the love of God, to swim in it as in a boundless sea. This love has its breadth and length and depth and height; it fills the mind with wonder and the heart with adoration. The love of Jesus is the most filling thing in existence! When you know it, it humbles you, transforms you, and draws out your love to Him in return. Love to God grows out of the love of God. Oh, let your soul say, “My Father, my God, I love Thee! My soul exults at the thought of Thy great love to me!”
And then, what a glorious summit: filled with all the fullness of God! This is the top of the ladder, as Paul sets it forth. First the strengthening, then the indwelling of Christ, then the knowledge of His love, and at last this filling up to all the measure of God. It pleased the Father that in Christ all fullness should dwell; and in Him you are rich to the fullness of riches. There is a fullness of grace, of comfort, of power, of love, a treasury never exhausted. Do not be content with a few paltry coins of blessing when you might have the unsearchable riches. The early Christians had power with God because they believed in a Christ whose fullness was ever freshly available. Moses, Elijah, those mighty men had power with God, not from their own merit, but from the tenderness of the Father’s heart and the merit of the appointed Mediator. You, too, may prevail if you can cry, “Abba, Father!” and plead the name of Jesus.
Be not cast down, then, but press forward. The love you seek is the very thing that will fill you. Christ is the power of God, and He will work in you to will and to do. Only take heed to the order: let the Spirit strengthen you, let Christ dwell in your heart by faith, then shall you comprehend the love of Christ, and so be filled unto all the fullness of God. Do not begin at the end and fret because you are not yet filled; but seek first that inner might and the conscious presence of the Savior. All that is in Jesus is for you, a fullness for Paul, for Luther, for Whitfield, and blessed be God, a fullness for you! He abates nothing of His store.
Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.
