We rejoice in your heartfelt cry to the Father, echoing the apostle Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-20. This passage is a profound declaration of our dependence on God’s power and love, and we stand with you in seeking His transformative work in our lives.

You are asking for the Holy Spirit’s strength and power, for Christ to dwell richly in your heart, and to know the vast dimensions of His love, width, length, depth, and height. These are not mere wishes but deep spiritual realities that God longs to fulfill in every believer. The inner strengthening by the Spirit is essential for us to live victoriously, especially in a world that constantly pulls us toward weakness and compromise. When Christ dwells in our hearts through faith, He becomes the foundation of our thoughts, desires, and actions. We are no longer driven by fear, selfishness, or worldly passions, but by His love and truth.

Yet we must also recognize that this prayer is not just for personal comfort, it is for all the saints. The love of Christ is not meant to be hoarded but shared, overflowing from our lives into the lives of others. When we are filled with the fullness of God, we become vessels of His grace, mercy, and power in a broken world. This is not a passive experience but an active surrender to His will.

We also note that you have rightly addressed this prayer to the Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, acknowledging the authority and mediation of our Lord. There is no other name by which we can approach God (John 14:6, Acts 4:12). Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and it is only through faith in Him that we are reconciled to the Father. If anyone reading this has not yet placed their trust in Christ, we urge you to do so today. Confess your sins, believe in His death and resurrection, and receive the gift of eternal life (Romans 10:9-10).

Father, we confess that without You, we are weak and prone to wander. But You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us. We encourage you to continue seeking God’s face daily, meditating on His Word, and surrendering every area of your life to Him. The more we abide in Christ, the more His love and power will flow through us. If there are areas of sin, compromise, or unbelief in your life, bring them before the Lord in repentance. He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

Let us also remember that this prayer is not just for us individually but for the body of Christ as a whole. We must pray for one another, bearing each other’s burdens, and encouraging one another in love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24-25). What a gift to come before the Father with this same prayer Paul poured out for the Ephesians. We’re grateful to join our hearts with yours in it, and we trust the Spirit is already at work as you speak these words.

This isn’t a one‑time petition but an invitation into a daily emptying so Christ can fill us afresh. You’ve asked for strength in the inner person, for love that goes beyond knowledge, and to be filled to overflowing with God’s own life, and that’s exactly what the Lord delights to give. One way to see this prayer take deeper root is to speak it aloud with another believer or a small group this week. Hearing these words in someone else’s voice, and knowing you’re not asking alone, often anchors hope when our feelings waver. If that’s not possible, you might pause morning and evening, slowly reading the passage back to the Lord as your own offering, and then sit quietly for a few moments letting his presence settle your heart.

We also want to gently remind you that when we pray this way, the Spirit often answers by drawing us closer through ordinary means: a verse that catches our attention, a nudge to serve someone, or a fresh awareness of Jesus in the middle of a hard day. He’s faithful to do immeasurably more than we ask or imagine, and we can trust him to complete the work he’s begun.

Father, thank you that you welcome us to ask for what you’re already eager to give. Strengthen this dear one through your Spirit in the deepest part of who they are. Make the love of Christ their steady home, not just a concept, and let them know, really know, the breadth and length and height and depth of it, even when it surpasses understanding. Fill them with your fullness and use them to pour that love into others. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.

You have laid hold of one of the mightiest prayers of the Apostle, a prayer which stretches far beyond the common requests of men. To be strengthened with might by the Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your heart by faith, that you may comprehend the love of Christ, and be filled with all the fullness of God, this is a ladder set up from earth to heaven, and every rung is of pure gold. Yet take heed that you begin at the bottom, for many a soul would leap to the fullness of God without first knowing the strengthening of the Spirit and the indwelling of Christ. That is not God’s order. The prayer begins, “Strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, according to the riches of His glory.” Here is the root: power from on high, an inward might that no resolution of the flesh can imitate. Cry for it! Plead for it! Without the Holy Spirit, you have no force, no life, no power to receive any spiritual gift.

And notice whose work this is. The Holy Spirit does not speak of Himself; He glorifies Christ. He takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto us. When you seek to know Christ’s love, you are on Holy Spirit ground. The Spirit delights to open the treasures of the Redeemer, to reveal the breadth, length, depth, and height of that love which passes knowledge. Only see to it that you do not merely talk of the love of Jesus and forget the love of the Spirit. The Spirit dwells in the narrow heart of man, a condescension that ought to melt our souls. Grieve Him not by careless living or by neglect of His Word. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; then will the Spirit speak through that Word and shed abroad the love of God in your heart.

You desire to know the love of Christ. This is not a mere head-knowledge. It is tasted, felt, handled when we are rooted and grounded in love. Christ loves His church specially, and each believer may say, “He loved me, and gave Himself for me.” If you have the Spirit of Christ, you have Christ Himself abiding in you, and the evidence is love. Where true holiness is, love must be present. But remember, love to God and His law is not natural; it is the work of the Holy Spirit. If you love His commandments, you are a new creature, and in that love you will have great peace, not always with men, but peace with God which keeps the heart.

Yet do not be discouraged if at times you feel far from this fullness. The Spirit deals with feeble men, and He knows our frame. It is your emptiness that draws the fullness of Christ. Of His fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. Go to Him, then, just as you are. Let your faith take firm hold, and wait upon the Spirit with earnest expectation. The indwelling of the Spirit, the knowledge of Christ’s love, the fullness of God, these are not distant dreams; they are the proper portion of every believer. Only do not separate what God has joined. Seek the Spirit for Christ’s sake, and seek Christ through the Spirit, and you shall find that He who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think shall fill you to overflowing. Then shall your heart sing, “To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”

The prayer you lift up from the Apostle’s words is no small request. You ask to be strengthened with power through the Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith, that you may comprehend the boundless love of Christ, and be filled with all the fullness of God. This is a petition worthy of the heavenly calling. It is greater than commanding devils, greater than raising the dead. For those signs are wholly the gift of God, but this knowledge and this filling require also your own earnestness and love. The love of Christ surpasses all knowledge, yet if Christ truly dwells within you, you shall know it, and not only know it, but be filled with the very fullness of God, which is to say, all virtue of which God is full.

Consider then what it means to have Christ dwelling in the inner man. It is not that He is shut up in a bodily space, but that as the fullness of the Godhead dwelt in Him bodily, so you are made full in Him. You have nothing less than He, if you abide in Him. And how shall this be? Not by idle longing alone, but by making room for Him. Has He been straitened in your affections? Have worldly cares, or perhaps some unlawful attachment, crowded Him out? I do not now speak only of gross sins, but of any love that draws the heart away from wholehearted devotion. Remember, without love for one another, not even martyrdom can profit. And if you truly love Him, you will keep His commandments, including those that govern the body and its relations. The mouth that would be like Christ’s mouth must not bless what God has not blessed, nor call a union holy that Scripture calls defilement. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ as a garment, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.

Yet if you do this, if you are rooted and grounded in love, then what shall you not attain? You shall be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and depth and height. And to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. This is the wealth that moth and rust cannot corrupt, the treasure laid up in heaven. It is not gorgeous buildings, not costly estates, but the man who has confidence before God, who is poor for Christ’s sake, who is really rich. Strive then for this gift. Make room for Christ in every corner of your soul. Let there be nothing common between you and earth. Then shall you be filled with comfort, you shall overflow with joy, even in tribulation. Then you shall not merely pray the words of the Apostle, but live them, and God will do exceedingly abundantly above all that you ask or think, according to the power that works in you. To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
