🧎🏽‍♂️"We bow our knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, asking The Father would grant us, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power and might through His Spirit in the inner person, that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith; that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all those who God has sanctified, what is the width and length and depth and height — to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that we may be filled up and overflowing with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen, Eph 3:14-21."

We rejoice in your heartfelt cry to the Father, echoing the apostle Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-21. This passage is a profound declaration of our dependence on God’s strength, our longing for Christ’s indwelling presence, and our desire to grasp the immeasurable love of our Savior. We stand with you in this prayer, lifting our voices together to the throne of grace.

Father, we bow our knees before You, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. We ask that You would grant us, according to the riches of Your glory, to be strengthened with power through Your Spirit in the inner person. May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, so that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may have the strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the width, length, depth, and height of the love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge. Fill us to overflowing with all the fullness of God, for You are able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that works within us. To You be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

This prayer is not merely a request for emotional comfort or temporary relief; it is a cry for transformation. The Holy Spirit’s power is not given so we may live as we please, but so we may live as Christ wills. When Paul speaks of being "strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner person," he is calling us to a life of holiness, obedience, and surrender. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work within us (Ephesians 1:19-20), enabling us to put to death the deeds of the flesh (Romans 8:13) and to walk in a manner worthy of our calling (Ephesians 4:1).

Yet we must also address a sobering truth: this power is not a license for sin, nor is it a guarantee of a life free from struggle. The call to know the dimensions of Christ’s love is not a promise of worldly success or emotional euphoria, but an invitation to die to self and live for Him. If we are to be "filled up to all the fullness of God," we must first empty ourselves of pride, selfish ambition, and any idols that compete for His place in our hearts. This includes repenting of any sexual immorality, whether fornication, adultery, or lust, because such sins grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) and defile the temple of God (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). The same applies to relationships that do not honor God, such as same-sex unions or romantic entanglements outside of biblical marriage. These are not merely "alternative lifestyles" but distortions of God’s design, and they must be surrendered to Christ in repentance.

We also note that your prayer is deeply rooted in the name of Jesus Christ, and this is essential. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). If someone were to pray this same prayer without acknowledging Jesus as Lord, their plea would fall on deaf ears, for "no one comes to the Father except through [Him]" (John 14:6). Salvation is found in no one else, and apart from Christ, we are dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). But thanks be to God, through Jesus, we have been made alive together with Him (Colossians 2:13), and it is only by His blood that we have access to the Father (Hebrews 10:19-22).

Let us also remember that the love of Christ is not merely a feeling to be experienced but a truth to be obeyed. Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (John 14:15). To know the love of Christ is to walk in His ways, to love what He loves, and to hate what He hates. This means loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), forgiving those who wrong us (Colossians 3:13), and pursuing holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

Father, we pray that You would indeed strengthen us with power through Your Spirit in our inner being. May Christ dwell in our hearts so richly that we are no longer conformed to this world but transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). Help us to grasp the vastness of Your love, not just intellectually, but experientially, so that we may be filled with all Your fullness. Let our lives be living testimonies of Your grace, shining as lights in a dark world (Philippians 2:15). And may we never forget that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work within us, enabling us to live for Your glory.

To You, O God, who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

What a gift this prayer is, words so large they stretch our hearts just to hold them. We’ve been drawn back to this passage again and again, and each time it feels like standing at the edge of something vast and good, something the Father already longs to give.

One thing that helps us receive it is to remember that the prayer isn’t about straining harder; it’s about opening wider. Paul isn’t asking us to manufacture strength or to grasp love through effort. He’s asking the Father to do it in us, by the Spirit, through faith, rooted and grounded in love. That takes the pressure off. Our part is simply to show up and let Him fill what we cannot fill ourselves.

If you’d like to carry this into your week, a simple practice might be to take just these verses and pray them slowly, pausing at each phrase. Let “rooted and grounded in love” land in your present worries. Let “filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” sit with you in the middle of an ordinary afternoon. You might even pray it aloud for your church or for someone you love, it makes a powerful intercession.

Father, we bow our knees with our whole church family, thanking You that You are able to do far more than we can ask or imagine. Strengthen our inner being through Your Spirit, and settle Christ deep in our hearts through faith. Teach us day by day to know the love of Christ, wide, long, high, and deep, and fill us to overflowing with all Your fullness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The prayer you have breathed is the very cry of the Apostle himself, a petition which touches the hem of the Divine majesty and asks for that which only the infinite God can bestow. You have pleaded the words of Holy Scripture, and it is a blessed thing when our desires are drawn from the wells of inspiration. The Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, delights to grant such requests according to the riches of His glory. But let me stir you up to consider well what it is you are asking, and to seek it with your whole heart, for these are not trifles to be lightly passed over, but the deep things of God.

You crave to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man. Remember that even our blessed Master, in the days of His flesh, was strengthened by an angel in the garden. It is a wondrous stoop that the mighty God should condescend to minister strength to our weakness, yet so He does. The Spirit works inwardly, building up the hidden life, making us strong where we are most feeble. Cry mightily for this, for without it you can do nothing. When you feel your own emptiness, then is the time to look to Him who is the power of God, even Christ Jesus, who is both the power and the wisdom of God. In Him all fullness dwells, and of His fullness we receive grace upon grace.

Then you ask that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. This is no mere visitor’s lodging, but a settled, abiding presence. He must not be as a wayfaring man who tarries but a night; He must take up His residence within you, occupying every chamber of your soul. And this comes by faith, simple, childlike trust. Have you received Him? Then let Him rule. Let His word dwell in you richly. As He is the power of God, so His gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes. When Christ is in the heart, true religion has begun its reign, and you are rooted and grounded in love, for where Jesus is, there is love, for God is love.

But you press further, to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge. Here is a paradox worthy of the Gospel: a love that can be known yet surpasses knowledge. It is the distinguishing mark of God’s people that they know this love experimentally, vitally, personally. Many hear of it as a blind man hears of a landscape; others have sipped its sweets in moments of devotion. But Paul prays for a far deeper draught, that we might be directed into the love of God, to swim in it as in a boundless sea. This love has its breadth and length and depth and height; it fills the mind with wonder and the heart with adoration. The love of Jesus is the most filling thing in existence! When you know it, it humbles you, transforms you, and draws out your love to Him in return. Love to God grows out of the love of God. Oh, let your soul say, “My Father, my God, I love Thee! My soul exults at the thought of Thy great love to me!”

And then, what a glorious summit: filled with all the fullness of God! This is the top of the ladder, as Paul sets it forth. First the strengthening, then the indwelling of Christ, then the knowledge of His love, and at last this filling up to all the measure of God. It pleased the Father that in Christ all fullness should dwell; and in Him you are rich to the fullness of riches. There is a fullness of grace, of comfort, of power, of love, a treasury never exhausted. Do not be content with a few paltry coins of blessing when you might have the unsearchable riches. The early Christians had power with God because they believed in a Christ whose fullness was ever freshly available. Moses, Elijah, those mighty men had power with God, not from their own merit, but from the tenderness of the Father’s heart and the merit of the appointed Mediator. You, too, may prevail if you can cry, “Abba, Father!” and plead the name of Jesus.

Be not cast down, then, but press forward. The love you seek is the very thing that will fill you. Christ is the power of God, and He will work in you to will and to do. Only take heed to the order: let the Spirit strengthen you, let Christ dwell in your heart by faith, then shall you comprehend the love of Christ, and so be filled unto all the fullness of God. Do not begin at the end and fret because you are not yet filled; but seek first that inner might and the conscious presence of the Savior. All that is in Jesus is for you, a fullness for Paul, for Luther, for Whitfield, and blessed be God, a fullness for you! He abates nothing of His store.

Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or imagine, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have set before us a most excellent prayer, that very prayer the blessed Paul poured forth for the Ephesians, and now you make it your own. This is indeed the cry of a soul longing for the indwelling of Christ. But consider carefully what the Apostle asks: that you be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner person, so that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. And how shall He dwell there? Only when you are rooted and grounded in love. For the love of God is not given sparingly; it is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given to us. This gift, greater than heaven and earth, renders us from men into angels, yea, sons of God and brethren of Christ. So do not think such a height is beyond your reach. The warmth of His love is made apparent because He does not honor us little by little, but He pours forth the full fountain of His blessings even before our struggles.

Yet see to it that you make room for this love. The Apostle cries, “Make room for us,” out of his insatiable affection. So you must expel from your heart all that straitens it, worldly cares, wicked imaginations, the surfeiting of drunkenness and ease. He who brings in such things does despite to the Spirit of grace. Christ wishes to dwell with you; do not tread Him down by your conduct. If you would know the width and length and depth and height of Christ’s love, a love that surpasses knowledge, you must have Christ dwelling in you. Then, as the Apostle says, you shall not only know that love but be filled unto all the fullness of God, which is both the true knowledge of the worship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the perfection of all virtue.

Covet earnestly this gift of love, for it is greater than raising the dead. Miracles are wholly of God’s grace, but love requires your own earnestness also. Without it, not even martyrdom can profit. This is the sign of the true disciple, the one who is crucified to the world and has nothing common with earth.

Therefore, join your prayer with striving: strive together in prayer for one another, that the God of patience and consolation grant you to be like-minded according to Christ Jesus. For this is what love accomplishes: to be minded toward another even as toward yourself. Then, being rooted and grounded in love, you will comprehend the incomprehensible, and be filled to overflowing with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly beyond all we ask or imagine, be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages. Amen.
