We join you in bringing these burdens before the Lord together and we thank you for your honest heart that desires forgiveness and a new beginning. We rejoice that you want to be forgiven and to leave the past behind, for God promises that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9. He also promises that as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us, Psalm 103:12. We want to gently point out that your request does not mention Jesus Christ, and it is only through Him that we have forgiveness and access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, trusting in His shed blood for the forgiveness of your sins, Romans 10:9.
We hear your desire to forget the past and God understands that longing. He says, Do not remember the former things, and do not consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Isaiah 43:18-19, and we are called to forget what lies behind and stretch forward to what lies ahead, Philippians 3:13-14. This does not mean pretending the past did not happen, but allowing Christ to heal and redeem it so that you can walk in newness of life.
We also lift up your need for a permanent place to stay and your desire to file for divorce and be free. We believe in the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman, for what God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:6, and we know that God hates divorce, Malachi 2:16. At the same time Scripture does speak of divorce being permitted in cases such as sexual immorality, Matthew 19:9, and calls us to seek reconciliation where possible, 1 Corinthians 7:10-11. Because marriage is so sacred, we encourage you not to make this decision fast, as you mentioned, but to seek godly counsel, pastoral wisdom, and much prayer. We understand the urgency you feel about housing, and we pray God will provide for you as your refuge and strength, Psalm 46:1, and that He will supply every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:19. We pray He will make His will clear about where you should live, for He promises I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you, Psalm 32:8, and if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, James 1:5. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight, Proverbs 3:5-6.
We hear your longing to be wanted and liked and to find forgiving people with a good sense of humor, and we pray God brings you a healthy, godly community, especially fellowship within the body of Christ where forgiveness and joy abound. If you are looking toward future relationships, we encourage you to see this season as one for healing and seeking the Lord, and to pursue any future relationship as courtship with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, for we are told not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers, 2 Corinthians 6:14. While you are still married in the eyes of God, pursuing new romantic relationships would be adultery, and even after a divorce, God calls us to purity, for marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers, Hebrews 13:4, and to flee sexual immorality, 1 Corinthians 6:18. True freedom is found not in quickly finding others who want us, but in being rooted in Christ and waiting for a godly spouse if it is His will for you to marry again.
We must also lovingly rebuke and correct two parts of your prayer that do not align with the heart of God. You prayed that your children would go through pregnancy and childbirth and have biological children who act and treat them how they treat you, and that your ex would get whatever he deserves. These are prayers of retaliation, and God calls us to a different way. Vengeance belongs to the Lord, for it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord, Romans 12:19, and Jesus commands us to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you, Matthew 5:44. We are to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32. To pray a curse upon your children, even out of hurt, is contrary to the love God has for them and for you, and we encourage you to release that hurt to Him and pray instead for their salvation, healing, and blessing, and for your own heart to forgive as you have been forgiven. In the same way, instead of praying that your ex gets what he deserves, we pray that God would deal with him justly and mercifully, bring him to repentance where needed, and provide for what you truly need according to His perfect justice and mercy.
We pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You that You forgive sins and make all things new. We ask You to forgive our sister for all her sins as she confesses them to You through Jesus, cleanse her, and help her to receive Your full pardon and to walk in freedom from guilt and shame. Heal the wounds of the past and give her peace as she looks forward to the new thing You are doing. Provide for her a safe and permanent place to stay according to Your provision and guide her clearly where to go and live, granting her wisdom to not rush but to wait on Your timing and counsel. Give her wise, godly counselors regarding her marriage, and help her to honor You in every decision about divorce, seeking Your will above all. Surround her with forgiving, joyful, godly people who will love her and point her to Christ, and guard her heart in purity, preparing her for a godly marriage if it is Your will, or for contentment in You alone. Forgive us for any desire for vengeance, and help her to forgive her children and her ex as You have forgiven her, and we pray You would bless her children with health, salvation, and godly lives, and bless them in any future pregnancies and families, and we pray You would work in the heart of her ex with both justice and mercy, and supply what she truly needs. Teach her to trust You with all her heart and to delight herself in You. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
