Heart

We join with you in this beautiful and humble request and we are encouraged by your desire for a softer heart and a closer walk with God, for this is a prayer He delights to answer.

The Lord knows our hearts can grow hard through sin, hurt, disappointment, or the cares of this world, and He promises to do the very work you are asking for. He says in Ezekiel 36:26, I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And in Psalm 51:10 we pray with David, Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. This is not something you must do in your own strength, it is a work God Himself does as you seek Him.

Drawing near to Him is both His invitation and His promise. James 4:8 tells us, Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. As you turn to Him with your whole heart, He will meet you. Jeremiah 29:13 also assures us, You will seek me and find me, when you search for me with all your heart.

We encourage you to continue to seek Him daily through His Word, through prayer, and through quiet surrender. Confess any known sin, forgive those who have hardened your heart, and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you and lead you. God honors a contrite and willing heart.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the high and holy name of Jesus, and we thank You for this seeking heart. We ask You to do what only You can do, soften this heart, take away anything that has made it stony or cold, and give a heart of flesh that is tender toward You and toward Your Word. Create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within. Draw this dear one closer to You day by day, help them to hear Your voice, to love what You love, and to walk in obedience and joy. Pour out Your grace and Your peace, and let them know the nearness of Your presence. We ask You to continue this good work You have begun until it is complete. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We are trusting God with you for a deeper intimacy with Him, and we encourage you to keep pressing in, for He who promised is faithful.

We love hearing a prayer like this. Asking God to soften your heart and bring you nearer to Him is a beautiful and humble request, and we are thankful you brought it to us.

We want to encourage you that this kind of longing itself is often how God draws us. Growth toward Him rarely happens all at once. It is usually gradual and quiet, with good days and harder days over a lifetime, but God is patient as He shapes us.

We have found it helps to keep a few simple ways of staying close to Him, not as a checklist but as ways to be with Him. Spending time in His Word, even a short passage to think about through the day, talking honestly with Him in prayer about where your heart feels hard or distant, and joining with other believers in worship all open space for Him to work. And we depend on His Holy Spirit to do what we cannot do on our own, to make our hearts more responsive to Him. Each person's walk looks a little different, so pay attention to what helps you truly meet with Him.

A gentle next step might be to set aside ten minutes each morning this week to read a psalm slowly and then simply tell God you want to be nearer and ask Him to soften what feels hard.

Father, we thank You for this heart that wants You. Soften what is hard, draw our friend close, and keep them near You day by day. Make Your presence known and help them sense Your love and leading. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Your prayer is itself a token of mercy, for the very desire for a soft heart is often the first softening of it. As Job said, God makes my heart soft, and in the best sense this is true. The Holy Spirit makes the heart like wax, impressible to His sacred seal, tender as the apple of the eye and sensitive to the slightest touch of conscience. This is not a work you can accomplish within yourself.

It is God's to give you a tender heart, not yours to create it. Do not attempt first to renew your heart and then to come to Christ for salvation, for this renewal of heart is salvation itself. You are not to get half the work done yourself and then come to Christ to have it finished. Come as you are, just as you are, hard heart and all, and trust yourself to Jesus. He who said, My son, give me thine heart, is the same who promises, I will give them an heart to know me, that I am Jehovah. When He reveals Himself to the soul, the heart admires His character, learns to love Him, for to know God is to love Him, and the idols are cast away.

The way in which the heart is softened is by looking to the Pierced One. It is not merely looking to Jesus as God which affects the heart, but looking to this same Lord and God as crucified for us. As it is written, they shall look upon me whom they have pierced. There at the cross is the place where God meets sinners, and the only place where it is safe for a sinner to meet his God. There Christ, the Just for the unjust, gave Himself up to die to bring us to God. Through His blood we who once were far off are made nigh, as near as a child to his father's heart, and we draw near to God in prayer at the mercy seat.

Therefore be wise enough at once to attend to His call. Give Him your heart now, without waiting. Come to God as you actually are, and ask Him to deal with you in Christ Jesus according to your actual condition. Believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him, for without faith it is impossible to please Him. Pray, and meditate on divine things, and keep your eyes upon the crucified Saviour, and He will keep your heart full and pure and undivided, giving you continual peace.

We join our prayer with yours, that the Lord would by His Spirit soften your heart, renew a right spirit within you, and draw you nearer to Himself through the infinite atonement of His dear Son. May He fix your heart upon Himself, so that you may say, O God, my heart is fixed, my heart is fixed, and may He grant you to know with growing assurance that Jehovah is indeed your God, pacified toward you through Christ. In the high and worthy name of Jesus we ask this.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
