Health

You ask prayer for overall health and wellness, and rightly so, for the body is a gift from God. But let us remember that the Lord who touched the fevered woman gave her not only relief from the burning heat but perfect strength in an instant, as no physician could do. He is able to restore you fully, body and soul. Yet often He permits affliction to linger, not from neglect, but to rouse us from spiritual dullness and draw us to Himself.

Consider whether any root of sickness may lie in the soul. For physicians tell us that gluttony and excess are the mothers of disease, while a temperate life is the mother of health. And far more than this, the diseases of the soul, envy, covetousness, sloth, weigh down the body and darken the heart. Walk by the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh; the Spirit brings health that the world cannot give.

Do not think that a few days of prayer or a season of fasting are enough, then to return to old ways. The soul, like the body, requires continual care. Yet even if you have long been insensible, do not despair. Many who seemed unmoved by ten sermons brought forth abundant fruit at the eleventh. The tree sometimes falls by one last blow, but all the previous strokes made ready the way.

So let your will, which may be as unstable as water, be brought to Christ. He changes water into wine, giving it body and warmth, and making it a cause of gladness. He can transform your weakness into strength, your fickleness into steadfast hope. Seek Him with your whole heart, not merely to be rid of pain, but to be made whole in the inner man.

I will pray for your health, yes, but above all that you may be granted the health of the soul, which is true and lasting. For the body must at last return to dust, but the soul that clings to Christ enters into eternal life, where there is no sickness or sorrow. Let your citizenship be in heaven, where the prizes do not change, and let your life reflect that hope. Then whether in sickness or in health, you will have a calm and solid soul, anchored in the love of the Lord Jesus.

Thank you for entrusting this request to us. I am praying for your overall health and wellness, and I want to encourage you with some thoughts that I hope will strengthen your heart as you seek the Lord.

There is a beautiful wish in Scripture where the apostle John tells a friend, "I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers." That isn't a blanket promise that every believer will be free from illness, but it does point to a real connection between the condition of our inner life and our physical well-being. When our soul is nourished by God's Word, gratitude, and trust, it can bring a settled peace that often helps the body. Yet we know that even some of the most faithful, godly people I have ever known have faced serious health battles. So while we pray for healing, we hold that prayer with open hands, knowing that God's ways are higher than ours.

If we look honestly at Scripture, we see that God does not always will physical healing in every case. Paul asked three times for a thorn in his flesh to be removed, and the Lord instead told him, "My strength is made perfect in weakness." That doesn't mean we stop asking; it means we learn to rely on a strength beyond our own. The person who has discovered their own frailty and then found the Lord to be their unfailing strength is truly blessed. That strength can turn even the valley of weeping into a place of springs, enabling us to go from strength to strength.

At the same time, never let anyone persuade you that the healing Christ offers is only spiritual. Matthew, writing by the Spirit, took the prophecy of Isaiah, "Surely he bore our infirmities", and showed it fulfilled as Jesus healed all manner of sickness. Our Lord has power over every physical and spiritual malady. He touched lepers, calmed storms, and commanded evil spirits. His compassion still moves Him today, and I believe in every kind of healing: instant, gradual, emotional, mental, and physical. When a doctor sets a bone or a body recovers through God's designed processes, that too is divine. We may not always understand why some are restored quickly and others must wait, but we trust the One who will ultimately make all things right.

While you wait and pray, also do what you can to care for the body God has given you. The Scriptures show that the Lord is interested in practical things that affect our health, cleanliness, rest, and yes, even what we eat. It is not a sign of weak faith to attend to diet or to give your body proper nourishment; it is wise stewardship. And remember that there is a spiritual man within you that needs daily feeding as well. As you set aside time to fast and pray, or simply to feast on God's promises, you strengthen your inner being. You can stand on David's testimony: "I will go in the strength of the Lord." The same confidence that carried him against a giant as a youth carried him on into old age, when he prayed, "Forsake me not when my strength fails." May that be your prayer too.

So I bless you in the name of Jesus. May He guard your mind, steady your heart, and grant you the physical and spiritual resilience you need for this season. May you know the quiet rest of trusting Him, whatever the day brings, and may you find that His grace is truly sufficient. Keep looking to Him; He is near.
