Health, repentance, bitterness

Lynetta Dove

Disciple of Prayer
I made my sister really upset for some reason (didn’t know she would get that upset) and she’s been overworking my mom about it and even blamed her for not stepping in. My head started feeling weird for a moment earlier and it started feeling weird again now that I’m laying in bed. I don’t want anything to happen to any of us just because of anger so please pray for us. Pray for our health. We’re all also trying to lose weight so please pray our primary care physician will finalize what needs to be done so we can get our weight loss medicine.

I’ve had a recent bitterness towards Christians right now, especially in my age range, because I feel like a lot of people are faking. I don’t have a church home because there aren’t any churches I feel comfortable walking through without feeling like I shouldn’t be there. That is genuinely how I feel. I still consider myself one but my faith is not strong right now.

I also have had this guy on my mind that I met a few years ago. I knew him through a friend. We never got to know each other personally but he cared for me in a romantic way that I’ve never been taken care of like before. Please pray for his salvation. I hate that we can’t put names anymore because that would significantly help for specific prayers but please intercede for me and my family. This anger I’ve had for a while is getting on my nerves. I can’t keep living like this. I feel like I’m back in the world with the way I’ve been thinking and feeling. Pray for the Church, the bride of Christ. I don’t think people are ready and I’m aware I’m not ready if I keep living this way.

We hear your heart in this and we join with you in seeking the Lord together in Jesus' name for repentance, healing, and peace in your home.

We are burdened with you over the anger and division between you, your sister and your mother. What you describe with your head feeling strange as you lay in bed, and your fear that something could happen to any of you because of anger, shows how deeply this strife is affecting your body and spirit. Scripture warns us about this very thing, Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil Ephesians 4:26-27. Anger that is not quickly confessed and forsaken opens a door to the enemy and harms our health. We must lovingly rebuke the bitterness and anger that you say has been with you for a while and is getting on your nerves. The Word says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Ephesians 4:31-32 and See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and many are defiled by it Hebrews 12:15. That root, if left alone, will defile you, your sister, your mother, and your view of the Church itself. If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift Matthew 5:23-24. We encourage you to humbly go to your sister and to your mother, confess where you have caused hurt even unintentionally, ask forgiveness, and seek to restore peace without blaming. Do not let this linger another night.

We also lift up your health and the health of your family before the Lord. We pray for that strange feeling in your head, for the stress and anxiety that comes with family conflict, and for your desire to steward your bodies well. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God. You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God 1 Corinthians 10:31. We pray your primary care physician will have wisdom and finalize what needs to be done regarding your weight loss care, but we also encourage you not to put your ultimate trust in medicine alone. Medicine can be a tool, but true health comes from the Lord, who gives you strength for discipline, peace that guards your heart, and self control. We pray for healing and for His peace, for In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:6-7.

We also hear your confession that you have had bitterness toward other Christians, especially those your age, because you feel many are faking, and that you have no church home because you feel you should not be there and your faith is not strong right now. We must gently correct this. Bitterness toward the body of Christ, even when we see hypocrisy in others, is still bitterness that the Lord calls us to put away. We are not to judge the heart, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart 1 Samuel 16:7, and we are called to forgive as Christ forgave us. Withdrawing from fellowship will only make your faith weaker, not stronger. Scripture exhorts us not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching Hebrews 10:25. There is no perfect church because we are all sinners saved by grace, but Christ loves the Church, His bride, and gave Himself for her. If you keep living isolated and in anger, you are right that you will feel back in the world, for Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world Romans 12:2 and Friendship with the world is hostility toward God James 4:4. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded James 4:8. We encourage you to ask the Lord to lead you to a Bible believing church where the Word is preached faithfully, even if you feel uncomfortable at first, and to commit there so your faith can be strengthened through the Word, prayer, and fellowship.

Concerning the young man who has been on your mind, we understand you never personally got to know each other yet you were moved by the romantic care he showed you. We pray earnestly for his salvation, for God desires all people to be saved and come to full knowledge of the truth 1 Timothy 2:4. At the same time we want to encourage you in biblical principles for relationships. We believe courtship is for the purpose of discerning marriage to another Christian believer, for marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman that honors God, and we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers 2 Corinthians 6:14. Do not let a romantic memory or longing draw you away from pursuing purity and waiting on the Lord for a godly spouse if it is His will for you to marry. If this man is not a believer, the most loving thing you can do is pray for his salvation and not pursue a romantic relationship outside of Christ. Seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well Matthew 6:33.

You said you feel you are not ready and that the Church may not be ready. That conviction is a mercy from God calling you to repentance. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord Acts 3:19. You mentioned Christ and the bride of Christ, and we are thankful for that, for it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, for there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If your faith feels weak, come to Him simply, confess that you are a sinner in need of His forgiveness, believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and ask Him to be Lord of your life.

We now pray together for you, your sister, your mother, that young man, and the Church.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, asking for Your mercy and forgiveness. We confess our bitterness, anger, and sin before You and ask You to cleanse us as You have promised. Lord, we lift up this family, touch this sister and mother and bring reconciliation where there has been hurt and blame. Soften hearts, grant humility to ask forgiveness and grace to forgive. Take away the root of bitterness and replace it with kindness, tenderheartedness, and love. We ask for Your healing hand upon their bodies, upon this head and upon the anxiety and stress that weighs so heavily, grant Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Give wisdom to their primary care physician and help them steward their bodies for Your glory with discipline and trust in You. Lord, restore this one's faith, draw them near to You, lead them to a faithful church home where they can be fed from Your Word and grow strong, and guard them from being conformed to this world. We pray for the salvation of this young man, that he would hear the gospel, repent and believe in Jesus Christ and be saved. We pray for Your Church, Your bride, that You would make us ready, washing us by the Word and keeping us watchful. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, amen.

Thank you for being so honest about where you are. We hear how heavy this feels with your sister and mom, with your health, and with the anger and bitterness that will not let go.

We are praying for peace in your home and for protection over each of you. Since you mentioned your head feeling weird twice, we encourage you to let your primary care physician know promptly, alongside our prayers for healing. We also join you in praying for wisdom for your doctor as you all discuss next steps for your health and weight loss care.

What you shared about bitterness makes sense. That kind of extended anger often grows when hurt goes unresolved and when we keep replaying how others should have acted. It can harden our hearts over time and wear on us physically, and it often harms the one carrying it more than anyone else. Deciding to release the desire to get even is one step, but the feelings of resentment often take longer to soften and that is normal. It does not mean your faith has failed.

Feeling uncomfortable walking into any church and disappointed by other believers your age is lonely. We pray God will gently lead you to a faithful, welcoming church home where you can be known and encouraged, and that He will restore trust as you seek Him.

Father, we lift this family to You. Bring calm where there is tension, healing and safety for their bodies, and wisdom for their doctor. Soften bitterness with Your grace, draw our friend closer to You, and draw the young man she mentioned to salvation in Christ. Make Your nearness known and guide each step forward. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Your honest and searching letter has been weighed before the Lord, and I thank you for speaking so plainly concerning your family, your health, your bitterness and your wandering thoughts. There is in your confession a work already begun, for you are not content to remain as you are, and you cry, I cannot keep living like this. That cry is not despised by God.

Concerning your sister and your mother, and the anger which has troubled your house and even your body, let me entreat you to seek not merely a carnal repentance which comes from fear of consequences, but that holy, healthy, heavenly repentance which is worked in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit. There is a repentance after a fashion which trembles because judgment threatens, but true repentance gives God glory. It weeps and abhors past sin because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it, and it avoids present sin because of the love of God who died for us. Such repentance looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only, and it is inseparable from faith. The repentance which ejects sin as an evil tenant is the same grace which admits Christ to be sole master of the heart. It pulls down and it builds up. Ask then, does your sorrow lead you to justify yourself, or to glorify God and to trust His remission. For repentance and remission of sins are preached in His name among all nations, and where there is true repentance there is full and free forgiveness. This repentance is the gift of God, not the product of your own resolve, and it is a repentance unto life. You may know it because it yields works meet for repentance and because it lasts. It lives as long as faith lives. It is a sweet bitterness which attends faith and becomes a source of tender joy, for it keeps us low and keeps Christ precious.

You speak of bitterness toward Christians and of feeling that you should not enter any church, and of a faith that is not strong. I would have you see that our first sight of Christ brings a bitterness into the soul, a mourning for Him as one mourns for an only son. That bitterness has most gracious effects. God makes the soul bitter with sin that He may make Christ sweet to us, and the world loses its charms for true believers. And one effect of this holy bitterness is to take away all bitterness against your fellow men. The cross, rightly seen, does not leave us sour toward others but softens us. God wounds us that He may heal us, He kills us that He may quicken us, and He prevents us from prospering in our own way that we may cry out and be drawn to Him. He does not drive you to repentance as a slave is driven with a whip, but His goodness leads you to repentance. Remember the family Bible, the prayers at the table, the mercies of morning and evening, and let His goodness draw you. Do not judge the whole bride of Christ by the frailty of some who seem to you to be faking. The Church is Christ's own, and He will present her without spot. Yet you need the means of grace, and you need the fellowship of the saints. Pray the Lord to guide you to a faithful congregation where the word of reconciliation is preached, where it is declared that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them. Go though you feel unworthy, for it is the sick who need the physician, and there the word and prayer and communion will strengthen that weak faith which you still profess.

Concerning the man who has been on your mind, I will pray as you ask for his salvation, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby he must be saved but the name of Jesus Christ alone. I cannot ask God to bless a romantic attachment apart from His holy ordinance. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and all affection and bodily union belongs within that covenant. Whatever care you felt from him, true care will lead you both toward holiness, purity and the will of God, not toward remembrance that feeds discontent or draws you back into the world. Bring this matter also to the cross. If God intends good for you both, let it be pursued in the light, with chastity, with counsel of godly people, and with salvation first. Seek first his soul and your own conformity to Christ, and trust the Lord with the rest.

For your health, and the heaviness in your head when anger rises and when you lie down, and for your mother and sister also, I will pray that the Lord will keep you in peace and grant you soundness of body and mind. Anger gives place to the enemy and disturbs the whole frame. Seek that reconciliation which is the fruit of repentance, be quick to confess where you have offended your sister, and seek to bear one another's burdens. For your desire to lose weight and for your physician to finalize what needs to be done, I will pray that God will give your doctor wisdom and that you will be led to steward your bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, with temperance and patience, not trusting in medicine alone but in the Lord who heals.

Let me pray for you now. O God of peace, who has prepared everything necessary for perfect reconciliation by the blood of Thy Son, look upon this weary soul and upon this family troubled by anger. Grant repentance which is Thy gift, a godly sorrow that needs not to be repented of, that gives Thee glory and looks to Christ only. Take away bitterness against Thy people and give a love for Thy house. Draw this dear soul not by terror only but by Thy goodness to return. Save, we beseech Thee, the one whose name Thou knowest and for whom prayer is asked, and bring him to know Jesus as Lord. Keep these bodies in health, guide the physician, and give quietness of spirit and sleep free from fear. Preserve Thy Church and make her ready for her Bridegroom, and make this one ready also by a repentance that lives and a faith that lays hold on Christ. In the name of Jesus, in whom is remission of sins, Amen.

Seek the Lord while He may be found. Continue to confess, to forgive, and to look to Christ. He has committed unto us the word of reconciliation, and that word is for you today.
