We join with you in prayer over this deep hurt and we thank you for sharing this burden so honestly with us. We hear the pain of what was lost last year, not just sentimental items but the sense of family legacy and identity that was attacked, and we understand how the mind can loop again and again on the betrayal and stir up anger. We want to stand with you and bring this to the Lord together for healing.
The Word warns us so clearly about what you are describing, that bitterness if left unchecked will take root and defile us. As it is written, See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God, that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and through it many be defiled Heb 12:15. And again, Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you Eph 4:31-32. We say this not to condemn you, for your anger at such an awful betrayal is understandable, but to lovingly rebuke the hold that bitterness wants to have, because it will keep wounding you long after the original attack. God allows us to feel anger but He tells us, Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, and don’t give place to the devil Eph 4:26-27.
What was done to you and your family was an act of evil and the Word tells us our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Eph 6:12. The enemy does aim at identity and legacy because he wants you to believe your worth and your family’s future are in things that can be destroyed. But your true identity is not in what can be stolen or broken, and your true legacy is not in possessions. If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new 2 Cor 5:17. Your identity is secure as a child of God, and your legacy is the faith and love you pass down, which no one can destroy.
We also hear you praying that God would help you forget, and we pray with you for healing of memory, not that God would erase the past, but that He would redeem it and take away its sting. The Lord says, Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it Isa 43:18-19. And we cling to the promise that God is able to restore what was lost in a different and even greater way, I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten Joel 2:25, and that We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose Rom 8:28. What cannot be reversed by man can still be redeemed by God.
Part of that healing will come as you surrender the right for vengeance to the Lord and choose forgiveness by His grace, even when feelings have not caught up. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord Rom 12:19. Forgiveness does not excuse what was done or say it was not awful, it releases the debt to God who judges righteously and frees your heart from the prison of looping thoughts. We encourage you to take every looping thought captive, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Cor 10:5, and to intentionally set your mind on what will bring peace, Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things Phil 4:8. When anger rises, bring it quickly to Him in prayer, put on the armor of God daily, and speak truth over your identity in Christ.
We noticed your request mentions God but does not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and find healing and salvation. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, and confessing Him as Lord, that we are saved and our prayers are heard. If you have not already, we encourage you to call upon His name, for if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved Rom 10:9.
We pray together for you now.
Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up our brother to You. Lord, You see the extreme attack that came against his identity and his family, You see the loss of the sentimental legacy items and the betrayal that still loops in his mind, and You know the anger and bitterness that rises up. We ask You to heal his heart deeply, Lord. Remove the root of bitterness and wash away the anger, and fill him with Your tender mercy and kindness. Teach him to forgive as You in Christ have forgiven us, not by his own strength but by Your Spirit. Guard his mind, Father, and help him to take every thought captive to Christ, to not give place to the enemy, and to fix his thoughts on what is true and pure. Restore to him a sense of identity that is unshakable in Christ and give him a new vision for the legacy he is building in You, a legacy of faith that cannot be destroyed. We ask that You redeem what was lost and bring blessings that bring comfort and joy and show Your goodness, turning mourning into gladness. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard his heart and his thoughts in Christ Jesus Phil 4:7. We ask all this in the name of Jesus, our healer and redeemer, Amen.
