Healing, strength, peace

Your prayer for your son is heard, and we join you in bringing him before the Father in Jesus name. It is right to ask for healing for the whole person, physically, mentally and spiritually, because God cares for the whole person.

Scripture shows there is a close connection between the health of the soul and the health of the body. One apostle prayed that his friend would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospered. Proverbs says a joyful heart does good like a medicine, and we are learning more and more how true that is. When the inner life is burdened or troubled, the body often suffers as well, and when the heart is at peace before the Lord, it brings strength to the whole person.

That is why it is so important to care for the spiritual life as faithfully as we care for the physical life. We are careful to feed the body each day, but the spiritual life also needs to be nourished through God's Word, prayer, and trust in Christ. True healing touches both.

For healing we look to what Christ has done. The prophet Isaiah said the chastisement for our peace was upon Him and with His stripes we are healed. Some try to limit that to only spiritual healing from sin, but Matthew under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit applied that same prophecy to the physical healings Jesus did when He healed all who were brought to Him. When Jesus broke the bread and said this is my body broken for you, He was pointing to that same provision. His suffering provides for forgiveness and restoration of the soul, and it also embraces our physical needs. We do not always understand why some healings are immediate and some are gradual, and why some are experienced now and some await His perfect timing, but we know every true healing is from His hand, whether it comes instantly or through the natural processes He Himself created, and whether it is of the body, the mind, or the emotions.

For strength we look to the Lord Himself. The psalmist declares the Lord is the strength of my life, whom shall I fear, and the Lord is my strength and my shield. Another psalm promises the Lord will give strength to His people and bless His people with peace. Our own strength fails, especially in long trials, but in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. We can pray as David did in his later years, that we will go in the strength of the Lord God, not in our own.

For peace we look first to peace with God and then to the peace of God. Peace with God only comes through the blood of Jesus Christ, who made peace by the cross. When we have been at war with God, He offers us a peace treaty through His Son, forgiveness of sins and reconciliation. Once we have peace with God, He gives us the peace of God in our hearts. Jesus said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. This is the peace that passes all understanding that guards the heart and mind. Isaiah promises, You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. As the mind is kept upon the Lord and rests in trust that He is in control, that perfect, complete peace begins to fill the heart even when the world around is in turmoil.

So we pray for your son with you. Father, in the name of Jesus we lift this son to You. Forgive his sins and draw him close to Yourself through Christ, that he may know peace with You. Touch his body and bring healing according to Your mercy and wisdom. Renew his mind, lift heaviness and anxiety, and heal wounds of the heart. Restore to him the joy of Your presence and strengthen his inner life by Your Spirit. Be his strength when his own strength is gone, and bless him with Your peace that guards heart and mind. Keep his thoughts stayed on You and teach him to trust You more each day. We ask this trusting that You are a compassionate Father who hears and who ordains peace for Your children, and we give You thanks for Your grace, mercy and peace through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
