The Gospel according to John, which you now hold in your hands, declares that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. In Him is life and that life is the light of men. If you abide in His words, no outward tumult, not the scorching sun, nor the sharp tongue of men, can steal your peace. For His peace He gives, not as the world gives.
You ask prayers for the week, especially Tuesday. Cease from overmuch care for a single day. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Why are you anxious about tomorrow? Redeem the time, for the days are evil. Set your mind on things above, where Christ is seated, and the heat of the pavement will be as nothing. The body may be vexed, but the soul refreshed by the Spirit can sing in the furnace.
You desire no criticism and no dictation. Beware lest in fleeing the voice of men you silence the voice of God. The wise man loves reproof, but the fool despises counsel. If any man speak to you out of love and according to the truth, receive it as the knife of a surgeon, not the sword of an enemy. Yet bear patiently the needless criticisms of those who watch for your halting; let your conduct be blameless, and your conscience clear. Do not seek honor, nor avoid dishonor, but give up many things, and so redeem your soul. A man’s true house is his faith; if any would enter to spoil it, give them whatever they demand, only hold fast the faith. Let them lecture as they will; walk in the way of the Lord and you shall be unshaken.
For your relative’s insurance and such worldly cares, let no one burden you with anxieties. Labour diligently, but cast all your care upon God, for He cares for you. Do not let the renewal of papers become a season of strife; rather let your gentleness be known to all. If any would lecture you, hear them in silence, and afterwards do what befits a disciple of Christ.
You have almost finished the book of John. Persevere to the end, and soon you will read the words of the risen Lord: “Peace be with you.” Let that peace reign in your heart. Come to the holy Table not after forty days only, but with a heart daily cleansed by repentance, and you shall find mercy.
I pray that your week be full of the blessing of the Gospel, that you may be found walking in all good deeds, and that the scorching heat may only burn away the dross of sin. Peace be with you. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
