Grief in Nepal

Thank you for bringing this heavy burden and for interceding with such compassion. You are right to see beyond the numbers to the people, each one made in the image of God and deeply loved by Him, and to carry their sorrow before the Lord.

Scripture calls our God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation. He is not distant from grief. He comforts those who mourn and those who are cast down and discouraged, and He draws near in the darkest hours to strengthen and encourage. Jesus showed this same compassion when He entered into the grief of a father who had just lost his daughter, speaking hope in the midst of hopelessness. That is the comfort we can ask for now for every family grieving a loss and for every family still waiting for word about a loved one, that God Himself would stand by them and sustain them.

We pray also for pastors and local believers who are caring for survivors while carrying their own sorrow. The Lord comforts us so that we are then able to comfort others with the same comfort we have received from Him. Pray that God will supply them with that strength and that His Word would be their comfort and hope in affliction, giving life and steadying their hearts when they do not understand. As the psalmist says, His merciful kindness and His tender mercies bring comfort, and His word gives hope when our hearts are in turmoil. When problems become overwhelming we lose perspective, but comfort comes as we lift our eyes from the trouble and fix them on the Lord.

We join you in praying for rescue workers and all who are bringing practical help, that God would protect them and use them, and that through them the hope and truth found only in Jesus Christ would shine clearly. In this world we will have tribulation, but Jesus has overcome the world, and even in tragedy we can trust that God is at work drawing people to Himself. May He comfort the grieving, refresh the weary, and let His peace guard communities facing such unimaginable loss.
