You come before the Lord with gratitude, and that is a sweet thing, for gratitude is the language of a heart that knows its dependence on the living God. You say, "I know full well You will bless my womb with children," and I would gently ask, upon what is this confidence built? Not upon a fleeting feeling, but upon the faithfulness of the God who cannot lie. Trust not in the warmth of a moment’s zeal, nor in a blaze of joy, but in Christ Himself. He is the great Physician; do not say you will trust Him only when you feel some certain token, trust Him for the very thing you seek, even the gift of children. Lay hold upon His promise as a child clings to its father, and let your reliance be simple and entire.
Yet take heed that your trust is fixed upon the living God, who alone has power to open the womb. He is no idol of the imagination, but a God with a great, warm, loving heart, who works in the midst of our temporal affairs. He is the Father of mercies, and He pities His children as a father pities his own. He does not afflict willingly, nor does He deny any pure desire without a purpose of love. Commit this matter into His hands, then, with all prudence and uprightness, but without earthly props or sinful means. He who clothes the lilies and feeds the ravens will not forget your cry, for He has said, "Behold, I and the children whom God has given me." He takes delight in His little ones, and He acknowledges them with tender care.
But I must press upon you a still weightier matter. While you seek this blessing, be sure that your trust for your own soul rests nowhere but upon Jesus Christ alone. To trust in self is to build upon sand; you are a dying creature, and nothing can happen to you worse than to trust in yourself. Flee from self-trust, for it is a gross falsehood, and cast yourself wholly upon the Savior who died and rose again. Trust Him as you feel yourself sinking, and you shall swim. Trust Him with your soul, yea, trust Him with a million souls if you had them, and He will save. Then, being made a child of God, you may safely trust all your affairs in your Father’s hands, knowing that He who gave His Son for you will also with Him freely give you all things.
Therefore, come with boldness to the throne of grace. Let your prayer be, "Lord, I trust in You; give me children if it be Your will, but above all, give me grace to trust You more." The Lord will deal gently with you, for He remembers that we are dust. Children are capable of deep piety and great service, and if He grants you this desire, bring them up in the faith, that they may be among the Lord’s living children and His heirs forever. But even now, trust Him for the journey, for He has said, "Like as a father pitieth his children, even so the Lord pitieth them that fear him." Rest in that pity, and in the finished work of the Lord Jesus. Amen.
