I give thanks with you that you have arrived back safely at your work and school. The journey itself is a mercy, and recognizing that is the beginning of a right posture before the Lord.
Your prayer against any arrows directed at you is a deeply biblical one. Scripture often speaks of words, schemes, and spiritual assaults as arrows. The psalmist knew what it was to feel those sharp arrows sticking fast, to be under a heavy hand. You are not naive in asking for a shield. The enemy bends his bow and notches his arrows in secret, aiming at the upright simply because they are upright. There is a very real spiritual hostility that you will encounter, whether it comes as a snide remark in the staff room, a hostile ideology in the classroom, or an inner accusation that tears at your peace.
But take heart. The Lord has not left you defenseless. Remember how He placed a blanket of protection around the earth, a shield of moisture and electromagnetic force. His care for a whole planet is a small picture of His personal, attentive care for you. Cry out to Him to be that very shield on your right hand, the side that is most vulnerable. The true danger is not merely an unkind colleague or a difficult lesson, but the cosmic arrows of an age that has aggressively ruled His Word and His truth out of the public square. A nation that turns from Him invites a curse, and you are now living and working right in the midst of that. Your presence there as a child of God makes you a target.
Yet, think of Joseph. The arrows flew at him relentlessly. A false accusation, a prison sentence, the deep sting of being forgotten. From the pit to Potiphar’s house to the jail, the arrows of injustice and slander cut deep. But what did those arrows ultimately accomplish? They could not put out the light of God’s presence with him. Those very same trials were the sharp, divinely-appointed tools that carved out the channel for his destiny. A life lived in the consciousness of the eternal changes how we see everything. Your protection does not mean a life without these attacks. It means that these arrows cannot ultimately destroy what God has ordained for your good and His glory.
So go into that workplace and that school with a right spirit. Do not be a griping servant, complaining about the spiritual monsters you have to face. What you do for God in those places must come from a willing heart, one that sees a divine assignment rather than a daily dread. That willing heart is the one He rewards. When the arrows fly, and they will, you can know the secret code that the world cannot read. Just as Jonathan shot his arrows and sent the boy to collect them, the message was hidden from the lad but clear to David.
Let other people chase after the stray arrows of passing conflicts and earthly cares. You listen for the Lord’s signal. If He whispers peace and a reason to stay, then gather your strength and remain. But if He signals that the arrows of spiritual hostility are clearly flying beyond you, marking a clear season to flee a particular situation or conversation, be sensitive and ready to follow. His leading.
He knows the plots of those who consult with worldly images, shaking their quivers to decide by chance which way to go. Our direction does not come from the fall of a marked arrow; it comes from the Shepherd. You will not be smitten by the sun of daily pressures or the moon of nightly fears, because the Lord Himself is your covering. That wall of protection around your mind and spirit is not a physical ten-foot block wall like a school trying to stop stray bullets, but it is far stronger. It is a spiritual fortress against the real, deadly strays of our age: the lies, the confusion, and the hatred of peace. My soul often dwells with those who hate peace, but I have learned that tribulation works patience as you learn to wait on God.
