Your prayer for understanding and clarity is itself a gracious work, for the desire to know the will of the Father and to have the heart touched with truth comes not from nature but from the Spirit of God.
Know this, that as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, and as certainly as it is the great heart of providence sending its pulsings through even the most distant limbs of human act, so in grace He is King, having mercy on whom He will have mercy. All things are under regulation and have an appointed place in God's plan, and nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. Yet this same sovereign God has set open the fountain of life with this blessed invitation, Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. You need not fear that you will be denied if you come to Christ in sincerity, for salvation is of God's will and whosoever wills to come shall be made willing in the day of His power, the Spirit working in you to will and to do of His good pleasure.
You ask for guidance and revelation, and here is the path in which the Lord delights to give it. There is a revealed will which we must not violate, and it is found in the Inspired Word of God from the first word of Genesis to the last line of Revelation. Believe it, for it will never mislead you. It has never misled any soul that trusted it. Search it daily, for you will often stumble upon a record of His providential dealings or a paragraph concerning His wonderful love that will cheer your heart and make His way plain. And there is also a providential will of God which we should always consult, with guidance which comes from the circumstances that surround us. The foolish man says, I will go, I will buy, I will sell, I will get gain, as if he could both propose and dispose without asking God's consent. But the wise heart learns to say and to feel, If the Lord wills, I will do this or that. So let your prayer be, I will go or I will stay, if it be the will of God, and you shall find that He orders your steps.
Do not seek a voice apart from the Word, nor a feeling apart from truth. The work of the Holy Spirit is not to set aside the Scriptures but to change the human will and to open the eyes to see the truth that is already there, to make Christ precious and His way plain. He will not leave His purpose half accomplished in those who seek Him. Ask what you will according to His Word, and He will hear you, though He will grant only what is for your profit and for His glory. Let the riches of His glory rather than the meanness of your own estate measure the compass of your requests.
We pray for you now, that the Lord would touch your heart with His truth, that He would give you a clear understanding of His will, that He would keep you from the evil current of human opinion which always bears the wrong way, and that He would keep you unspotted and faithful as you wait upon Him. May you take the water of life freely by faith in Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we must be saved, and may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you on every page of life till you see Him face to face. Thy will be done, O Father, in this dear soul as it is in heaven, in Jesus name.
