Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your prayer for mercy and grace in this night of worrying has been heard, and I join my voice with yours before the Lord who hears every cry.
I understand the heaviness you carry, lying awake with thoughts of food, rent, and work. This kind of anxiety weighs down the soul and steals sleep, and Scripture speaks directly to it. God does not desire that you be crushed by worry, but that you be established in security and liberty in Him. He frees us from anxiety not by making us careless, but by teaching us to cast our cares upon Him, because He cares for you.
There is a difference between caring for the needs of the body and being consumed by desire for more. We are taught not to make provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts, by going beyond what is necessary into excess and wantonness. Yet we are also taught to make provision for health and necessity, as when Paul tells Timothy to use a little wine for his stomach and infirmities. To seek daily bread, a place to live, and honest work is not greed, it is need, and the Lord knows you need these things. He who clothes the lilies and feeds the sparrows knows your hunger and your rent and your search for labor. What He asks is that we prune away anxious striving for excess and spend our chief industry on spiritual things, seeking first His kingdom and His righteousness, trusting that He will add what we need.
This present life with all its pressures is like a sleep, and much of what troubles us in the night will pass like a dream. But your shame will not remain and your suffering is not forgotten. God sees you and His mercy endures. So I encourage you to bring each need to Him in prayer with thanksgiving, to do the work that is set before your hands each day, and to rest your heart in His promise to provide.
Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, have mercy on Your child who is weary and sleepless. You know the need for food, for shelter, for provision to pay rent, and for open doors to honest work. Grant grace and peace that passes understanding, quiet the anxious thoughts at night, and provide daily bread according to Your riches and wisdom. Give strength to seek work diligently, favor with those who hire, and wisdom to steward what You provide. Teach us to trust You for necessary things while keeping our hearts fixed on You. In Jesus Christ Almighty Name, Amen.
