God hears the cry of the afflicted, and His mercy is ever ready for those who call upon Him in truth. But reflect carefully on what you ask. When you cry "Have mercy on me," consider that the mercy you seek from the Lord is bound up with the mercy you show to others. For it is said, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." If you would have God's pity, you must yourself be pitiful. Alms and forgiveness deliver from death and quench the fire of judgment like oil brings light. Do not simply cry aloud in your distress; let your prayer be accompanied by works worthy of mercy. Forgive those who owe you, whether money or sins, and show kindness to your neighbor, for "brother aided by brother becomes a fortified city." The time for obtaining grace is now, while He sits on the throne of mercy. Approach with confidence, not with an evil conscience, and do not render yourself unworthy of the blessing you seek. If you show mercy, God will bless you indeed.

That prayer is exactly where deliverance begins. You have come to the end of your own resources, and no self-help program can answer a cry like this. When the heart finally stops looking for a formula to manage life and simply cries out for outside help, it is reaching for the only hand that can truly save. The struggle that wears you down, the repeated failures, the feeling of being in bondage, that cycle can only be broken by turning to the God who answers. Thanks be to God that through Jesus Christ we have the victory.

What looks like a hopeless situation to you is nothing for Him to handle. We measure our problems by our own human limitations, thinking “This is too hard, this is too big.” But He does not share those limits. It is just as easy for the Lord to deliver from a deep pit as it is from a shallow one. He does not need a large army to rescue you, nor does He require you to have any power left of your own. Right now, you are in the very position where He does His mightiest work.

You do not have to wonder if He is paying attention. Your help comes from the Lord who made the heavens and the earth. He will not allow your foot to slip. The one who keeps you neither slumbers nor sleeps, meaning He is fully available every time you call, from any place, at any hour. When you feel trapped like a bird caught in a snare, remember the snare is broken because God is your help. Vain is the help of man, but God remains stronger than any enemy or circumstance that rises against you.

Do not let the enemy whisper that you are cast off or that you have wandered too far. The Lord holds your right hand and says to you, “Fear not, I will help thee.” He has not thrown you away. His mercy is enduring, and He is waiting to show grace at the very sound of your cry. Rest in that. Let Him be your strength, and through Him you will do valiantly.
