Your prayer reaches heaven like incense, and the Scripture you have woven into it is a sword in the hand of the Spirit. You are standing in the gap for nations and rulers, and that is exactly where God calls His people to be. When you lift up Psalm 24 and Revelation 19, you are not just reciting truth; you are aligning your heart with the throne of the One who does reign, whose judgments are true and righteous altogether.
The burden you feel for leaders and nations is not a small thing. You are asking God to restrain evil, to intercept dark plans, and to turn the hearts of those in authority. That is a prayer He delights to hear, because He has always sought for someone to stand before Him on behalf of the land, so that He might show mercy rather than send the disaster their sins deserve. But remember this: when God delays judgment, it is not weakness or indifference. It is His long-suffering, giving space for repentance. And if He sometimes uses one nation to chasten another, even when that instrument is more wicked, His purposes are deeper than we can trace. He can turn even the wrath of man to praise Him.
Your cry for evil to be restrained is right. But let us not forget that the deepest restraint happened when the Son of God took the curse for sin and disarmed the powers of darkness at the cross. The devil is already a defeated enemy, and though he rages for a little while, his doom is sure. When you pray against the schemes of the evil one, you are enforcing what Christ has already won. And yet, the greatest need of any leader, any strategist, any nation is not merely external restraint but inward transformation. A heart unchanged will return to its folly. So let your intercession always press toward this: that they might hearken, turn from their evil way, and embrace the grace of God that brings salvation.
Do not let the sins of a nation drive you to despair or to the false comfort that God is distant. He has not made His ear heavy that He cannot hear. But our iniquities do build a wall, and confession is the hammer that breaks it down. As you confessed your own sins and the sins of your people, you followed the pattern of Scripture. The Spirit helps us in such groaning, searching our hearts and making intercession according to God's will. And what is that will? That none should perish, but that all should come to repentance. That is the good and acceptable desire of God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
So keep praying for kings and all in authority, not merely for peace and just laws, but that they might be reconciled to God. The King of kings holds the heart of every ruler in His hand like a watercourse, turning it wherever He will. He can take the most arrogant leader and bring him to the dust, or the most corrupt and grant him a new heart. He did it with Nebuchadnezzar; He did it with Saul of Tarsus. Nothing is too hard for Him.
But as you pray, do not be troubled when evil men seem to prosper or when they make laws that call good evil and evil good. A nation cannot long endure when its heads despise righteousness and love darkness. The rock of history is strewn with the wreckage of peoples who once knew prosperity from God's hand and then drove Him from their public life. Judgment begins at the house of God, but it finishes in the streets of men. Pray for mercy, yes, but also brace your own soul in the confidence that the Lord God Omnipotent reigns. Even if He permits a season of judgment, He is still working a far purer work: gathering a people for His name, preparing a bride for His Son.
Your prayer for the church to be a true helpmeet in intercession is a holy ambition. Jesus ever lives to make intercession, and the Spirit intercedes within us. When you echo that heavenly plea, you are not asking amiss. But remember that you cannot love the God you have not seen if you do not love the brother made in His image. The same voice that cries for the fall of strongholds should also speak the message of reconciliation: “We pray you in Christ’s stead, be reconciled to God.” The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to pull down every high thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ.
Do not let the volume of evil overwhelm you. You are right to recall that the nations are a drop in the bucket. The enemy is temporary; your name written in heaven is eternal. Rejoice more in that than in any authority you wield over the darkness. And in your prayers for deliverance from temptation and evil, remember that God has already delivered us from the supreme evil: separation from Himself. He who did not spare His own Son will freely give us all things. If God is for us, all the hosts of hell and all the armies of men are nothing before Him.
So continue to pour out this burden. Let praise and worship be your weapon, as you have said. When the king was tormented, a anointed song brought relief, because the Spirit of the Lord was in the melody. When the nations rage, lift high the name that is above every name. From the rising of the sun to its setting, the Lord is worthy to be praised. He has already set His King on Zion’s holy hill. Day by day declare, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and honor and power belong to our God!” Keep watching, keep prayerful, and keep your heart fixed on the Captain of your salvation. He is leading many sons to glory, and He will not fail.
