God, why so much pain?

Himani2

Disciple of Prayer
Oh God, why are You giving me so much pain? If You didn’t want to give me anything, why did You give me this life? I have to ask for everything, and even after asking, I don’t get what I need.

We hear the deep ache and weariness in your cry and we weep with you before the Lord, for your pain is not hidden from Him. We want to gently correct the thought that God gave you life to withhold good from you or to cause you pain for no purpose. That is not His heart toward you. He gave you life because He loves you and has a purpose for you, even when that purpose feels obscured by suffering. This broken world brings pain through sin, loss, and disappointment, but God is not cruel. Psalm 34:18 tells us Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit, and Psalm 56:8 reminds us He puts your tears into His bottle and records them. He sees every tear you have shed and He does not despise your honest questions.

We also hear your frustration that you have to ask for everything and still do not receive what you need. God does invite us to ask, and He promises to hear us. Matthew 7:7 says Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. Yet sometimes we ask and do not receive because we ask outside His will or with motives that would not lead to our ultimate good, as James 4:3 explains you ask and do not receive because you ask with wrong motives. At other times God in His wisdom answers differently than we expect, or waits for the right time, because He is giving what we truly need rather than only what we think we need in the moment. Philippians 4:19 assures us My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus, and Romans 8:28 promises We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. That good is not always immediate relief from pain, but being shaped, refined, and drawn closer to Him, as James 1:2-4 teaches that the testing of faith produces endurance.

We notice you cried out to God, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have open access to the Father and lasting hope beyond this pain. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet placed your full trust in Jesus, we urge you to turn to Him, confess your need, believe that He died for your sins and rose again, as Romans 10:9 says if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. He bore our pain and carries our sorrows and He alone can give rest to the weary soul, as Matthew 11:28 invites Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

We pray together for you now. Father, we lift up this precious one who feels overwhelmed by pain and unanswered asking. We ask You to reveal Your love and nearness in a tangible way, to comfort the broken heart and heal the crushed spirit. Lord, forgive any misunderstanding of Your character and help our dear one to see that You gave life as a gift and that You have thoughts of peace toward them, as Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Teach us to ask according to Your will, to trust Your timing, and to rest in Your promise that You will never leave nor forsake us. We ask that You supply every true need, give strength for today, and fill the heart with hope that one day You will wipe away every tear, as Revelation 21:4 promises He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Draw this heart to Jesus, that in Him there may be peace, forgiveness, and eternal life. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and mediator, amen.

We encourage you to keep pouring out your heart honestly before God, to stay in His Word daily, and to not walk through this alone. Please reach out to a faithful pastor or mature believers who can walk beside you, pray with you, and remind you of truth when pain clouds your vision. We are continuing to pray that God will answer your cries according to His perfect love and wisdom and that you will experience His comfort and provision in ways you can clearly see.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect, deliver, heal and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

We've read your words and we hear how heavy this feels. Asking why you were given life if it feels full of pain, asking and not receiving, that is an exhausting place to be. Thank you for being honest with God and with us.

We don't have easy answers for why the pain is so deep right now, and we won't pretend we do. What we do believe is that God can hold your honest questions without turning away, and that your life still has value even when it doesn't feel that way to you.

When everything hurts, it can help to not carry it alone. Would you consider letting one person in this week, a pastor, a trusted friend or family member, or a counselor, know how you are really doing? If you notice your mood staying low, sleep or appetite changing, or hope feeling distant for more than a couple of weeks, please reach out to a doctor or counselor as well as continuing to pray. Talking with someone in person can bring support that prayer alone is not meant to replace.

You are not forgotten in this, and we are praying for you.

Father, we bring our friend to You right now. You see the pain and the questions and the weariness of asking. Draw near, give a sense of Your presence and care today, and guide them to wise, caring help around them. Give them a little strength for today and hope for tomorrow. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your cry of pain has been heard, and it is not a strange cry for a child of sorrow to utter. When the heart is heavy and prayer seems to return empty, the soul is tempted to ask why life itself was given.

Settle this in your mind first, as the Psalmist did when he said, I cry in the daytime but you do not hear, yet you are holy. Though you should have years of unanswered prayer, do not let your heart suggest any reason which would dishonor Him. He is holy in His giving and holy in His withholding, and His holiness is your anchor when you cannot understand His providence.

There are causes for unanswered prayer which we must consider before we accuse the Lord. Sometimes unanswered prayer is a Fatherly chastisement for sin committed or an admonition against sin harbored. Sometimes there is sin even in the prayer itself, when we ask amiss or with a divided heart. And sometimes the Lord is not denying but strengthening you. He is strengthening your muscles and sinews by the arduous exercise of waiting, that you may be more useful and more rooted in Him in the future. His delays are not denials. His long dated bills will be punctually honored, but He will have you set your face to seek Him with resolute purpose and fervent supplication, not with cold and distant words.

You ask why so much pain. Look to Jesus Christ, for there you will see suffering perfected and pain understood. He was not made perfect in character by suffering, for He was always perfect, but He was made perfect as the Captain of our salvation through suffering. He suffered being tempted, and His suffering was greater than any we can know because He was more pure than any of us. He suffered without alleviation and without qualification. There was no sin in Him that brought the suffering upon Him, and there was no compulsion that forced Him to suffer. He willingly drank the cup that our sin had filled, and He did not rebel. He prayed, Father forgive them, even while they mocked Him. In all our affliction He was afflicted, and for this very reason He is able to succor them that are tempted. He has become a tender sympathizer and a faithful physician because He has passed through our sorrows. No pain you feel is unknown to Him.

You say you must ask for everything and still do not receive what you need. Remember that sincere prayer may be very feeble to us, but it is always acceptable to God. He heard your first prayer when you asked for mercy and to have your sin blotted out through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved. And having heard that, He will hear your present prayers, though the answer may not come in the way you expect. Jacob prayed with great humility and with holy argument, pleading the promises of God, and his prayer was answered, but not as he had expected. So it may be with you. God may be answering by giving you Himself rather than the thing you asked, and by teaching you to live by faith and not by sight.

Do not turn from Him because the answer tarries. Go straight to God and say, O Lord, You know what I need, and plead His promises in Christ. Confess any sin that conscience points out, and ask Him to search you. Then continue to wait with a fervent and humble heart, looking back upon the manifold answers He has already given, and trusting that what He withholds is withheld in wisdom and love.

Life was not given you in vain. It was given that you might know the Savior who suffered outside the camp, who bore grief and death that you might have eternal life. If you have not yet cast yourself wholly upon Him, do so now, for He invites the weary and heavy laden to come and find rest. And if you are His, know that this present pain, though it feels overwhelming as travail, will ennoble the whole work of grace in you, and will make the mercy that follows more precious. He who suffered for you will not leave you to suffer alone, but will by secret supplies of grace keep your soul alive till He brings you to where pain shall be no more.
