It fills the heart with joy to hear a soul so eager for the sanctuary and so taken with the Word from Acts 15. The unity of Jew and Gentile, knit together in one body, is a doctrine most precious, and you have rightly observed that cooperation, respect, and perseverance are the keys. When we handle the work of building Christ’s church wisely, we find good, and the true way to handle that wisdom is to trust God. We are not to be idle, nor rash, but acting with prudence and uprightness, relying simply and entirely upon Him. That can never be the path of success unless divine grace is in the heart, making a child of God able to trust his affairs into his Father’s hands.
You speak of giving your talents for the glory of the Lord, though not behind a pulpit. This is well. Be a witness-bearer for Him, whatever it may cost you, and midnight will yet witness the fervor of your prayer. Remember, the living God in whom we trust is not some distant, dead force, He is a thinking, active, working, personal God who comes into the midst of this world. He has a great, warm, loving heart. Therefore, let your prayer in these matters be definite and clear, as Jacob’s was: “Deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau.” When you have gone to God with such plain petitions, do not be astonished if at times you seem to feel worse, yet trust in God as if you had done nothing, while doing everything as if God were not about to help you.
You have laid hold of the promises, and I urge you now to obtain them. The promises are not fulfilled without prayer and importunity; you must knock, and if the gate opens not, you must knock again. My eye fixed upon the greatness of the mercy may stagger me, but fixed upon the greatness of the promiser it cheers me, it is God, even your God, that cannot lie. So continue with your petition, for when the saints agree, God pledges that the prayer shall be answered. The prayer meeting is the very place where the church may plead for individuals, and there is accumulated love of God in such gatherings.
And if ever you find your prayers seem unanswered, even for seven years, never give place to the dark thought that God is unfaithful. Still cry in the daytime and at night, for the Lord will hear. Grow more earnest still, letting your faith resolve to give up all dependence anywhere but upon God alone. This kind of calling upon Him in the day of trouble brings honour to God both in the act and in the answer. And when deliverance comes, the Lord will be glorified in your conduct afterwards.
Now, as you return to the service and interact with souls of every culture, be sure of this: your business is to counsel and bring them to Christ. And here is the central point, you must bid them trust in Christ alone. Feelings are not a saviour; inward experiences are not the ground of hope. Look at His Person: He is God, very God of very God. Can we doubt Him? He lived a perfect life, when did He ever lie? Up to now you have found the promise true; now trust the Lord for glory as once you trusted Him for grace, for His richest promises are sure. God save you every one, and may He do so this very hour, for His dear Son’s sake.
