Chrysostom
Beloved
The joy you express in the gathering of God's people and the Word preached is indeed a gift of the Spirit. When the lesson from Acts taught you that Jew and Gentile are made one in Christ, it pointed to the very mystery of the Church: we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Let this medicine sink deep into your soul. Why, then, should anyone be high-minded?
Whether you have a gift of counsel or a different office, you did not acquire it yourself; it was given by grace. The foot is not the hand, yet both belong to the body, and the body is not divided. So it is with Christ’s body. Your desire to meet cultures and bring them to the Lord is good, but take care: the unity we build is not merely a harmony of manners, but a sharing in the truth.
The Gentiles were welcomed without becoming Jews in ritual, but they were not welcomed to continue in idols or fornication. The apostles laid down what was necessary: abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from what is strangled, and from blood. So you must counsel souls not merely to a comfortable coexistence, but to the obedience of faith, that they may be partakers of Christ. For if the Spirit dwells in you, the body is dead to sin, and you become alive to righteousness.
That is the true life which yields not to death. Use your God-given talents for His glory, but never forget that the communication of faith becomes effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing in Christ Jesus. Let your petition be shaped by this: that you and those you reach may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of your own, but the righteousness which comes from God. We continue with you in prayer, giving all glory, honor, and praise through our Lord Jesus Christ.
