Scripture reminds us that the world and all that is in it belongs to God, that He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. He is not in need and He is never in a financial crisis. He does not need our gifts as if He were lacking something. What He desires from us is restored fellowship and a heartfelt walk with Him. Because all things are His, we do not need to give Him the impression that He is unable to provide. We can trust Him as the One who is in control and who will bring His work to pass as we patiently wait for Him, without giving in to discouragement or turmoil.
Jesus also shows us that He is especially attentive to the person with the greatest need. He sees your friend's need, and He sees your own need and your willing heart. He knows what you have and what you lack.
The Bible teaches that giving is to be as each person has purposed in his own heart, willingly and not under pressure, and that God loves a cheerful giver. It is not about trying to impress God with an amount, but about showing our love and gratitude for all He has given us. You are to be commended for a readiness to help and for a spirit of hospitality and distribution to the needs of others. That spirit is precious to the Lord, even when resources are limited. At times those who are being blessed are called to help those in great trouble, and at other times the roles may be reversed, but in every season God is able to supply what is truly needed.
In your situation, be honest and gracious with your friend about what you are able to do. What you can offer now, your presence, your care, your prayer, your fellowship, has real value in the Lord. If God intends for a material gift to be provided for this visit, He is able to make a way, whether through you or through another means, according to His wisdom. If the provision does not come in the way you hoped, trust that He has not overlooked either of you and that He will still use your visit for good. Do not feel compelled to pursue money in a way that would compromise your conscience or your peace before Him. Simply commit the need to Him and rest in His care.
