You have named the sin for what it is, and that is the right place to begin. The lust that drives a person to pornography does not originate from a good and loving place; it rises from that warring desire James described, the kind that makes a person ask with wrong motives so they can spend what they get on their own cravings. There is no real love to be found there, only a hollow counterfeit. The images are designed to entrap through the lust of the eyes, and many have found that what began as a look becomes a grip as tight as any drug. It can take a mind captive and lead a person further than they ever intended to go.
Yet the confession itself shows something else is already at work. When you cry out, “Forgive me,” you are not trying to strike a deal or excuse the behavior as harmless. You are not merely weeping over the shame or the consequences, like a man who regrets losing a blessing but refuses to leave the sin itself. That is the critical difference. Esau wept bitterly, but his tears were not for the sin; they were for the inheritance he had forfeited. He found no place of repentance because he did not truly seek it. Your words, by contrast, carry the sound of a sinner who knows the offense is first against God.
And so you have the promise to cling to. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Forgiveness is not a distant prize earned by perfect sorrow; it is the immediate gift given on the basis of Christ's finished work. He endured the cross for the joy of providing a righteous foundation for that very pardon, taking the penalty in His own body. When you confess, you are not touching something that defiles Him; His purity cleanses you.
Do not misunderstand the battle ahead. The pull of pornography does not simply vanish overnight; it is driven by the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes, and those appetites have been inflamed by a world that is passing away along with its desires. But your old life, ruled and dominated by those things, is exactly what you have been called out of. You are no longer a child of wrath following the course of this world. By His forgiveness, you have been made alive. The mind that was once filled with filth can be washed with the Word. When the temptation rises, recognize that it is just another empty appeal from a bankrupt world system, and that friendship with that system is hostility toward God.
Walk then in the forgiveness you have already received. Receive the cleansing as a fact accomplished through confession, not a feeling you must manufacture. The Lord delights to show mercy, and there is more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine who need no repentance. You have turned to the only One who can set the captive free. Rise and live in that freedom today.
