Father, we also pray for those who have already made this confession. Strengthen their faith and help them to walk in obedience to Your Word. Guard them from the temptations of this world and fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may live lives that honor You. Teach them to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Jesus with wholehearted devotion. May they grow in the knowledge of Your Word and be transformed by its truth.

Lord, we ask that You would help all of us to turn away from sin and to pursue righteousness. Convict us when we stray, and lead us back to the path of holiness. May our lives be a testimony to Your grace and power, drawing others to You. We pray that You would unite us as brothers and sisters in Christ, encouraging one another in love and good deeds.

It is a cause for thanksgiving to hear your heart for those who are seeking salvation and to see the precious word of Romans 10:9-10 held forth with such plainness. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. This is the way God has appointed, simple enough for a seeking soul to understand, and glorious enough to save the chief of sinners.

You have done well to join with this confession the call to turn from sin and to follow and obey Jesus. Scripture never puts these asunder. The repentance which is the work of the Spirit of God and which God accepts gives Him glory, for it owns sin to be sin and Christ to be all. There is a carnal repentance that is of the flesh and passes away, but true repentance is wrought in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit. No faith can be genuine but such as is perfectly consistent with repentance for past sin, and no repentance is true but that which consorts with faith. They come into the soul together, and they live together as long as faith lives. The repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant and the faith which admits Christ to be the sole Master of the heart, the repentance which pulls down and the faith which builds up, must go hand in hand. Christ was nailed to the cross for our sin, and that sight is what makes repentance holy and hopeful, a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His finished work.

Take note also of the due order and clear connection between faith and confession. With the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. The same things which through faith are the basis of our salvation become the subject of our confession before God. That which we privately and personally rest upon for salvation we are to publicly and emphatically avow. This confession is personal. His faith must be his own faith, his repentance must be repentance of his own sin, his coming to Christ must be his own coming. Nobody can perform your religion for you. Do say and say it unmistakably, I am the Lord's, trusting not in your own faith or your own repentance or your prayers or your conquests of sin, but resting wholly upon Jesus Christ crucified, who is all our salvation, the Author and Finisher of faith. Simple faith is itself the work of the Spirit, for we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith, and the Spirit bears witness to Christ so that we may rest upon Him.

For every sincere seeker there is good news. The Lord gives liberally to all true seekers and upbraids them not. The natural heart rebels against the simplicity of trusting Christ alone, yet the Holy Spirit shows us that simply to trust in Jesus is at once the safest and most suitable way, for if salvation were by doing, what could we do. Acquaint yourself with God and be at peace. Study the Scriptures. See who Christ is and what He has done. Any soul that by prayer seeks God and desires salvation through Jesus, through faith in Jesus, shall be heard and shall find its God. He that believes on Him is not condemned, not even now, notwithstanding every sin he has committed. Seekers shall have reasons for praising the Lord, for when they have found the Lord Jesus Christ they will glorify the God of their salvation.

Your counsel to read and study Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, beginning in the book of John, is wise. There you will see the Lord Jesus set forth in His person and His work, that you may know what to believe and whom to trust. Continue to believe and to repent, to confess Christ with the mouth and to follow Him in obedience, not to earn salvation but as the fruit of that salvation already received by grace through faith.

We join you in prayer for all who are looking for salvation. O Lord, grant to seeking souls the wisdom to see the simplicity of salvation in Christ alone. Work in them by Thy Spirit that holy repentance which gives Thee glory and that sincere faith which rests on Jesus crucified and risen. Bring them to confess with the mouth what they believe in the heart, and to turn from sin to follow Thee in newness of life. Open their eyes as they read Thy Word, especially in the Gospel of John, that they may behold the Lamb of God and live. This confession is not only words, but a faith that lives in the heart and shows itself in a changed life. To believe truly is to turn from sin, to condemn our own sins before God, and to bring forth fruits worthy of repentance. God does not save us because of our family or our background, but because we come to him ourselves in repentance and faith, trusting in Christ alone and his one sacrifice for us. That good confession, like the confession Christ made before Pilate, must be held with endurance and obedience as we follow him.

That promise rests entirely on grace. Salvation is not something you can earn and not something you deserve. It is God's gift received through faith in Jesus Christ alone. To add any other requirement as a way to earn salvation would change the gospel into something that is not good news at all. The true gospel is that through faith in Jesus, God forgives and pardons all sin and counts that faith as righteousness, just as He did with Abraham.

That faith, when it is real, is more than words. The Bible teaches that we are justified by faith, and the kind of faith that truly justifies will show itself in a changed life. Faith without any evidence in how we live is not living faith. Works can never produce faith and they can never take the place of faith, but genuine faith will produce fruit. It will lead to turning from sin, to submitting to Jesus as Lord, and to a desire to obey and follow Him. Those works do not earn salvation, they are the proof that salvation has already been received. An empty confession that says Jesus is Lord while continuing to walk in disobedience does not reflect the faith of the heart that God looks for.

This is why your encouragement to read the Gospels is so important, because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Miracles alone do not create saving faith, the word of God does. The Gospel of John is a wonderful place to begin because it clearly presents Jesus as the Son of God and the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, calling each person to repent and believe the good news. From there Matthew, Mark and Luke will give a fuller picture of His life, His teaching, His death and His resurrection.
