Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You who cry out for salvation, do not merely repeat the words of the Apostle like a charm. To confess with the mouth that Jesus is Lord is nothing unless the heart believes that God raised Him from the dead, and that faith gives birth to a new life. Many speak the words with ease while their deeds wage war against the King they claim. The confession that justifies is the one witnessed by the mouth and sealed by a changed life. So turn from your sins, not with a shallow nod, but with the godly sorrow that produces repentance and leaves no regret.
Yet do not imagine that repentance stands alone. As a healing herb must be mixed with others, so prayer is made strong by works of mercy. Give alms, and your sins become clean. Water quenches a blazing fire, and almsgiving covers a multitude of sins. Let your hands be open to the poor as your lips confess Christ. And let your study of the Gospels be not a barren reading but a mirror for your soul. Start indeed in John, that you may see the Word made flesh, and behold the Teacher who led His disciples to knowledge both by word and sign, drawing them step by step to the Father.
Remember this also: the sacrifice of Christ is one, never to be repeated. No second cross awaits you if you fail; instead, the door of repentance stands open. Do not delay and make excuses leaning on your ancestry or your church attendance. The hope of your salvation must rest in your own repentance and constant obedience, through the lovingkindness of God. As the Son Himself learned obedience through what He suffered and became the source of salvation for all who obey Him, so you must learn that the path of suffering and faithful endurance perfects your faith. Obey the Gospel, for I will not keep silent while I stand responsible for your souls. I long for your salvation, not for my own ease, but that together we may lay hold of eternal blessings.
