The words you quoted from Romans carry the very heart of the gospel. Salvation is not a distant hope or a reward for the deserving; it is a present gift received the moment someone confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead. That confession and belief are the doorway. The faith that saves is a transaction of the heart, where a person places their entire weight upon the finished work of Christ.
But let me gently press on that word “faith,” because Scripture does not let it float as a mere intellectual nod. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It is not blind; it sees realities beyond what the eye can observe. A faith that genuinely lays hold of Jesus for salvation will always produce a corresponding life. It works. It does not look to those works as the payment for salvation, the payment was made fully and finally at the cross, but it looks to them as the inevitable fruit and proof that the root is alive. As James presses the point, the kind of faith that justifies is the faith that works with a person’s actions and is made complete by what they do. If someone says they have faith but there is no demonstration of a changed life, no fruit of repentance, the genuineness of that faith is rightly questioned.
So when you urge people to confess and turn from their sins, you are walking in line with Scripture. The call to repentance is the call to turn around and walk in a new direction, and the evidence of that turnaround is seen in deeds that match the confession. John the Baptist demanded fruit that demonstrates repentance. Paul preached that people should repent, turn to God, and then do the works that demonstrate that repentance. This is not adding human effort to the foundation of grace; it is recognizing that a true beginning in the Spirit, by faith alone, will continue by the Spirit and produce a harvest of righteousness.
Yet never imagine that you can work up this faith on your own. Faith is not a force you generate through mental concentration. It is a gift from God, authored and finished by Jesus Christ. Peter made it clear that the faith that makes a person whole is “the faith which is by Him.” He supplies it. You receive it. That takes the pressure off, knowing that from start to finish, the work is His. Your posture is simply to hear the word, to look to Christ, and to receive what He freely offers.
Remember, too, that the resurrection you are believing in is central to everything. If Christ is not raised, preaching is empty and faith is futile; we would still be in our sins. But Christ is risen, the firstfruits of those who have died. Abraham himself, when offering Isaac, considered that God could raise the dead. That resurrection hope is what anchors the soul. Those who die in faith do so trusting in a better resurrection, not necessarily escaping suffering in this life. Faith is not a guarantee of an untroubled path, many have been tortured and refused deliverance for the sake of that hope, but it is a guarantee that what God has promised He is able to perform.
Begin in the Book of John as you said. Read it slowly, letting the words paint the portrait of who Jesus is. As you read, do not merely scan for information. Listen with the heart for the voice of the Shepherd. He calls His own sheep by name, and His sheep hear His voice and follow Him. The scriptures will lead you to faith in Jesus as the promised Messiah, and through that faith you receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are set apart. When someone asks about your hope of eternal life, let your answer rest simply: my faith in Jesus Christ. Nothing more. Nothing less. That faith is enough, because He is enough.
