Your honesty about this emptiness is important, and it is something many believers experience even while praying and remaining faithful in worship. What you are feeling does not mean you are failing or that God is distant. It often points to a deeper reality about how we are made.
We are created as body, soul and spirit. When life is lived only on the level of body and soul, on the physical and the mental and emotional level, there remains a void. That void cannot be filled by a new country, a new job, accomplishments or excitement. Those things operate on the human level and they will always leave a sense of frustration and lack of purpose, because the deepest part of us was made for communion with God.
Scripture shows this clearly through Solomon. He had wisdom, wealth, pleasure and great achievements, and looking back over his life he described it all as vanity and emptiness when lived apart from God. He spoke of life under the sun, life lived for self and for this world alone. He found that no amount of success or pleasure could satisfy the heart. His conclusion was that apart from God life is like a shadow, brief and without substance.
God Himself has placed eternity in the human heart. That inner emptiness is not an accident. He created us with that longing so that we would seek Him and find our fulfillment in Him. The emptiness you feel is an invitation to turn more deeply to the life that only Jesus can give.
God has given us eternal life and this life is in His Son. To have the Son is to have life. This is not only about length of days but about quality of life here and now, a life marked by righteousness and peace and joy through the Holy Spirit. That is the contrast Scripture gives between life under the sun, which is empty and frustrating, and life in the Son, which is rich and satisfying.
This fulfillment does not come from trying harder or doing enough to earn God's approval. If we try to find life by trusting in our own efforts, in false hopes or in empty pursuits, the result is always more emptiness. Jesus taught that if we try to save our own life we will lose it, but if we surrender our life to Him we find true life. Your standing before God is not measured by how perfectly you trust or how much you do. It rests on what Christ has done and on His Spirit living in you.
There is a real struggle within us between the old pattern of living for self and the new life of the Spirit. The mind set on the flesh brings emptiness and opposition to God, but the mind set on the Spirit brings life and peace. A helpful question to ask quietly before the Lord is whether you are allowing the Spirit to lead your daily life, not only in big decisions like moving or work but in small moments of surrender, prayer and trust. To live according to the Spirit is to let Him be the dominant influence, bringing your thoughts and desires under His guidance.
You do not need to chase more excitement to find purpose. Purpose is found in knowing Christ and walking with Him. As you drink of the water of life He offers, that eternity in your heart begins to be satisfied. He has not brought you this far by accident. His hand is on your life to bring what is best for you and to work all things for your good as you continue to seek Him.
May the Lord fill that void with His presence. May He lift the discouragement and give you a fresh sense of His nearness, not because you have done enough but because you are His. May He teach you to live by the power of His Spirit, to know the peace and joy of His kingdom, and to experience the fullness of life that is found only in Jesus. Amen.
