We come before the Lord with hearts full of gratitude for the model of prayer our Savior Jesus Christ gave us in Matthew 6:9-13. This prayer is a beautiful reminder of the order in which we should approach our Heavenly Father, first seeking His glory, His kingdom, and His will before presenting our own needs. It is a profound truth that when we prioritize God’s purposes, He graciously attends to our provision, relationships, and protection, just as Matthew 6:33 assures us: "But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

We lift up the truth that God’s name is to be honored above all else, and His kingdom is to be our foremost desire. Father, we ask that Your will be done in our lives as perfectly as it is in heaven. May we never grow complacent in our pursuit of You, but instead, let our hearts burn with a holy fire to see Your glory revealed in every area of our lives. We rebuke any spirit of self-sufficiency or pride that would cause us to seek our own will above Yours, Lord. Forgive us for the times we have rushed ahead of You or neglected to consult Your Word and Your Spirit in our decisions.

As we come to the portion of the prayer where we ask for our daily bread, we recognize this as a plea for both physical and spiritual provision. Father, we trust You to supply all our needs according to Your riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Yet, we also ask that You would cultivate in us a spirit of contentment and gratitude, so that we do not fall into the trap of greed or discontentment. Help us to steward well what You have given us, using our resources to advance Your kingdom and bless others.

The next petition, "Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors," is a sobering reminder of the grace we have received and the grace we are called to extend. Lord, we confess that there are times when bitterness, resentment, or unforgiveness takes root in our hearts. We rebuke the enemy’s attempts to divide us from our brothers and sisters in Christ through strife or offense. Search our hearts, O God, and reveal any areas where we have withheld forgiveness (Psalm 139:23-24). Give us the strength to release those who have wronged us, just as You have released us from the debt of our sin through the blood of Jesus. Remind us that harboring unforgiveness only harms our own souls and hinders our prayers (Mark 11:25).

"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil", this is a cry for divine protection and discernment. Father, we live in a world that is hostile to Your truth, and the enemy prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). We ask for Your hedge of protection around us, our families, and our loved ones. Guard our hearts and minds from the temptations of this world, whether it be lust, greed, pride, or any other sin that so easily entangles us. Strengthen us to resist the devil, so that he will flee from us (James 4:7). Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we may walk in purity, integrity, and holiness.

We are reminded that the power and the glory belong to You forever, Lord. This is not just a closing statement but a declaration of our trust in Your sovereignty. You alone are worthy of all praise, honor, and worship. We surrender our lives, our plans, and our desires to You, knowing that Your ways are higher than our ways and Your thoughts higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Father, we also want to address a critical truth that must not be overlooked: salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 declares, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!" If anyone reading this has not yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so today. Confess your sins, repent, and believe in the finished work of Christ on the cross. Romans 10:9 says, "If you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." This is the foundation of our relationship with God, and without it, we cannot approach the Father or receive His blessings.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts humbled by the truth of Your Word. We thank You for the gift of prayer and for the example Your Son gave us. Lord, we seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that You will provide for all our needs. Forgive us for the times we have prioritized our own desires over Your will. Cleanse us from all unrighteousness and fill us with Your Holy Spirit.

We ask for Your provision, both physically and spiritually. Meet us in our needs, Lord, and help us to trust You completely. Soften our hearts to forgive those who have wronged us, just as You have forgiven us. Deliver us from temptation and protect us from the schemes of the enemy. Guard our minds, our hearts, and our steps, that we may walk in a manner worthy of the calling You have placed on our lives.

Father, we declare that Yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. We surrender our lives to You, asking that You would use us for Your purposes. May our lives bring honor and glory to Your name. For those who do not yet know You, we pray that they would come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Open their eyes to the truth of the gospel and draw them to Yourself.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above all names, the only name by which we can be saved. Amen.

Thank you for sharing this prayer. The way Jesus taught us to pray in Matthew 6 is such a steadying gift, He gives us the order that keeps our hearts at rest: first the Father’s glory and kingdom, then everything else we need for the day. When we start there, we rediscover that the God who clothes the lilies and knows what we need before we ask is the same God who holds our daily bread, our relationships, and our protection in His hands. It’s a relief to remember that seeking His kingdom isn’t about striving; it’s about returning our gaze to the One who already cares.

As we pray those familiar words, we also find ourselves gently examined. “Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” is both a request and a quiet reorientation. Maybe the next step this week is simply to pause in that line and ask honestly: is there anyone you’re still holding an old debt against, some resentment you’ve been carrying? Not to rush into forgiving, but just to name it before the Father and ask Him to help you want to let it go. That is often where His provision of daily bread includes a different kind of release.

Our Father, we honor Your name. Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in this dear person’s life as fully as it is in heaven. Give them the daily bread they truly need, provision, wisdom, and peace. Forgive us our debts, and help us forgive those who owe us. Lead us away from every temptation, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are Yours forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Your cry ascends in the very pattern our Lord taught, and it reaches the throne of the Almighty. You plead the Father’s glory first, and then your needs, this is the order of true prayer, seeking the kingdom and His righteousness, knowing the rest shall be added. I see the labor of your heart, the weight of daily trouble, the sense of sin, and the fear of falling. Listen, then, to the gospel that answers every petition.

The God of salvation has found a ransom! Deliverance from the pit is not a thing to be earned by your pleadings or purchased by your tears; it is the free gift of Divine Love, a way invented by God and carried out by God, for He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. This is the very root of your daily bread. Did He give His own dear Son to put away your sin, and will He not give you bread and water?

He that daily loadeth you with benefits, even the God of your salvation, knows your frame. The rod may smart, but it is your Father’s rod, and not a stroke of it comes apart from His overruling hand. All your ills lie within the fence of Omnipotent Providence, and the chastening that seems so sore is made profitable, dropping sweeter consolation than Jonathan’s rod ever yielded honey. Therefore, if you have fled to Christ as your Salvation, look no more to your own strength for deliverance from evil.

He who saved you from the guilt of sin is pledged to save you from its power, sanctification is as much the work of God as pardon. Temptation will come, the Evil One will shoot his arrows, but the Lord has not forsaken them that seek Him. Only see to it that the pardon you crave is matched by the pardon you give; for if you do not forgive your brother his trespasses, neither will your Heavenly Father forgive you. But let your faith grasp the promise: He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Let this be the glad fruit upon your lips: I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. He has delivered, He does deliver, and He will yet deliver. His is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

You set forth the Lord’s own prayer as a pattern, and right it is to cling to every word He taught. Yet consider: when you pray “forgive our debts, as we forgive our debtors,” you bind yourself to a covenant of mercy. If you harbor bitterness against any, if you refuse pardon, you are asking God not to pardon you. What terror lurks in that, if the heart is hardened! The mouth that will soon receive the holy Mysteries must be kept pure of curses and revenge. For if the unforgiving are not forgiven, how shall one who prays with an impure mouth be heard? The prayer belongs to believers, and it never ceases to offer a remedy for the sins that cling even after the font. But this remedy is only given to those who from the heart release every debt against their neighbor. Search yourself. Are you holding anyone to account, nursing an old wound, or uttering hidden imprecations? First go and be reconciled. Make God propitious by showing the mercy you seek, for He gave us more than we asked when we begged merely for delay.

And take care that your “daily bread” is not turned into a provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. We are permitted to care for the body for health, not for wantonness. Ask indeed for sustenance, but seek first the kingdom and His righteousness; then all these things shall be added. The day is full of tempests, the marketplace a war. You need the weapon of prayer early and by night, accompanied by thanksgiving, not to bend God to your fleeting desires but to align your will with His. The Father knows your needs before you ask; the prayer is not to inform Him but to school you in lowliness, to make you ever mindful of your dependence, and to lift your eyes to His surpassing benevolence. He waits to be petitioned, not because He is reluctant, but that you may come crowned by your own entreaty, having learned compassion through your own infirmities.

If you have fallen, do not despair. The very command to pray thus daily testifies that after the laver there remains a washing for offenses. Penitence, endurance, and perseverance are still required. The innocent children of the Church cry out for the guilty, and the Master is moved with compassion. Only do not make the prayer a string of words while the life remains asleep in the dreams of worldly ease. Awake! The present life is a dream, and all its glittering phantoms shall vanish. Let your prayer, then, be seasoned with thanksgiving for what God has already granted, adoption, enlightenment, the heavenly gift. And when you stand to pray, let your whole being declare: Your kingdom come! Your will be done! This is the cry of a faithful servant who submits his ways to the Father’s wise and good pleasure. So pray, and so live, that your prayer not be hindered.

The pattern you’re following in prayer is right at the heart of what Jesus taught: the Father’s glory and kingdom take the first place, and then our own needs find their proper context. When you look at the way the crowds wanted to take Jesus by force and make Him a king, you see the human tendency to grasp at the kingdom on our own terms, usually to meet our immediate physical desires. He slipped away from that because His kingship would be established on a far different foundation. The true bread from heaven isn’t about a quick provision that merely postpones death for a day; it’s the living bread that gives life to the world. So when you pray “give us our daily bread,” you’re not just asking for sustenance. You’re depending on the One whose flesh was given for the life of the world, the same Lord who took the bread and said it was His body broken for you.

This is where the request for forgiveness and deliverance from temptation finds its anchor. Temptation so often comes as that cunning shortcut, a suggestion that you can use what God has given you to satisfy a legitimate need in an illegitimate, fleshly way. That was the thrust when Satan told Jesus to command the stones to become bread. It wasn’t a test of whether He could do it; creation obeys its Creator. The test was whether He would step off the path of the Spirit to meet a physical need on the enemy’s terms, taking the easy way rather than trusting His Father’s way. You’ll face that same choice again and again. There’s no sin in the fact of being tempted, even our Lord was tempted. The sin comes when the desire conceives and you yield, turning aside from God’s path for immediate fulfillment. So your prayer “lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” is a cry for the wisdom and patience to wait on God rather than grabbing for something on Satan’s terms.

You can rest in this: the kingdom, the power, and the glory belong to Him forever. Right now, God’s will is not being done on earth as it is in heaven. We see the rebel kingdom still at work, and Satan tries to hold by force what he tempted Jesus with, the claim to the kingdoms of this world. But Jesus refused the shortcut of a throne without the cross. Because He went the way of the cross, the kingdom was secured. When you pray “Your kingdom come,” you are aligning yourself with the coming reign where every knee bows and the saints possess the kingdom under the whole heaven. In the meantime, the kingdom has already come to every heart that acknowledges Christ’s lordship. You’ve been delivered from the power of darkness.

So as you ask for daily bread, remember it’s the true bread that sustains you for eternal life. As you seek forgiveness, walk in the same kind of mercy toward others that the new covenant was purchased with His blood to provide for you. And when the pull of the flesh or the shortcut surfaces, and it will, recognize that the easy path is a trap. The peace and patience your spirit truly longs for come only through obedience and waiting on God’s faithful provision.
