How much of the Lord’s Prayer consists in prayers for God, rather than for ourselves? This very order, the Father’s glory first, and then our needs, is nothing less than the pattern of Heaven, taught by those sacred lips. To pray after this manner is to spread our case before the Most High with the strongest of arguments, for we remind Him of His own honour, His kingdom, His will. Such pleading cannot fail, for it is the very thing God intends prayer to be: a reminding our heavenly Father of His promises. Yet see that this pattern be not a mere form; a prayer that never reaches the heart of God is no right prayer. It must spring from a living soul that abides in Christ, a soul quickened by the Spirit, else the words are but empty echoes.

When you cry for daily bread and forgiveness, you join in that intercessory work which is the sweetest prayer God ever hears, the very style of your Great High Priest. And as these petitions ascend, they bind hearts together in union, fostering that holiness essential for the extension of His kingdom. Be not discouraged if the answer delays or takes an unexpected shape, as with Jacob at the brook. Prayer, mighty prayer, will yet prevail if it has but time! Only watch against the hindrances: an unholy walk, a cold heart, a neglected closet. Let your whole life become so soaked in supplication that a glance of the eye is communion with God. The Lord quicken you in this way; and may the glory of the Father be the perpetual jewel set in every petition, till faith gives place to sight and prayer to eternal praise.

You have rightly ordered your prayer, putting the Father’s glory and His kingdom first. For He said, Seek first the kingdom, and then all these things are added. To hunger for His name to be honored, for His will to be done perfectly on earth as it is in heaven; this is the prayer of a soul that has learned where true blessedness lies.

You then ask for daily bread. Mark well the word “daily,” the bread for one day. He does not command us to pray for riches or delicacies, but for sustenance, and gives liberty only for today. He draws us away from taking thought for the morrow and fastens our soul on what is truly necessary. The tyranny of nature demands food, but the command is for moderation, not luxury. Yet what shamelessness it is that we so often neglect the hunger of the poor for bread, while we feast! We are all one body, nourished by the same loaf which is the Body of Christ. If we partake of one bread and become one, how can we not show the same love to those in need?

You ask for forgiveness as you forgive your debtors. Consider what great things you have received: you who were in darkness, at enmity with God, lost, yet suddenly enlightened, counted worthy of sonship and the unspeakable mysteries. If he who thus obtained salvation still will not forgive a small debt against him, how can he hope for mercy again? The forgiveness you pray for is one of sheer grace. Blessedness is found precisely here, where iniquity is forgiven and sin covered, not from debt but from mercy. So you must release your debts without reservation.

You rightly plead not to be led into temptation but delivered from evil. You are not alone in this fear. We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter, facing daily deaths and countless dangers. Yet recall that God is faithful. No temptation has taken hold of you except what is common to man. He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond your strength, but with the trial will make the way of escape. The Apostles endured affliction, distress, peril, and sword, yet they were more than conquerors. So lift up your soul with a lofty spirit. For if those in the old covenant, who had only earthly promises, looked down on present dangers, what pardon could we find if we deal languidly after the promise of Heaven and the Kingdom above?

As you conclude with the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever, remember: this is the way that leads to the Kingdom, a narrow road of daily self-denial and ready forgiveness. Keep this order.

The heart of that prayer turns everything toward the Father first. His glory, His kingdom, His will. That is not just a reverent opening; it reorders the rest. When you begin there, all the needs that follow are set in their right place. We are not coming to bend His purposes to our wants. We are coming to have our wants reshaped by His purposes. So the promise of Matthew 6:33 stands behind it: seek first the kingdom, and the needed things are added. The prayer teaches us how to seek that kingdom.

When you ask for daily bread, you are asking for far more than flour and water. Bread is the most basic sustenance, and yes, God cares about the physical hunger, the bills, the health of the body. But the provision points deeper. Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness and still died. The true Bread from heaven is not what merely fills the stomach for an afternoon. The Father is always giving the true Bread, and that Bread is a person. Jesus Christ said He is the living bread that came down from heaven, giving His flesh for the life of the world. So when you ask for bread, you are ultimately asking for more of Him. To feed on Him by faith is to have your deepest hunger met. Do not seek the bread that perishes while neglecting the bread that satisfies the soul forever. The flesh profits nothing; it is the Spirit who gives life.

The next breath of the prayer deals with forgiveness. We ask to be forgiven as we forgive others. This is not a transaction we earn, but it is an honest reflection of a heart touched by mercy. There is no true forgiveness found in covering up sin or justifying yourself. Peace comes through confession. When you acknowledge your transgression, God is faithful to deal with it and cleanse it. And the proof that His mercy is real in you is that it flows outward. A heart stiff and unforgiving toward a debtor has forgotten the immensity of its own canceled debt. The same bread that nourishes you also nourishes the brother or sister beside you. You are part of one body because you partake of that one true Bread, Christ. That shared life means your relationship with God cannot be separated from your relationship with others.

The prayer then leads into the reality of temptation and deliverance from evil. Temptation is the pressure to turn aside from the path of the Spirit and take a shortcut through the flesh. The enemy’s oldest whisper is the suggestion that you can use your own way to get immediate fulfillment. He says, command these stones to become bread. Use what you have to serve yourself, to escape the hard road of trust and obedience. Every temptation presents that same fork: will you walk after the flesh or after the Spirit? The sin is not in the temptation itself. Even our Lord was tempted. The sin is conceived when the will gives in and turns after the desire. But remember, God is faithful. No temptation has seized you except what is common to humanity. With the trial, He always makes the way of escape so you may be able to bear it. Praying not to be led into temptation is asking for eyes to see that exit door and feet willing to walk through it.

In the garden, facing the cup of suffering, Jesus Himself told the disciples to rise and pray so they would not enter into temptation. He knew the test was coming. For us, the ultimate deliverance from evil was won by Him enduring the cross. He broke the true bread of His body and poured out His blood to break the power of sin. Because He walked through death into life, the kingdom, the power, and the glory are His forever. When you pray this prayer, you are not reciting a formula. You are anchoring every need, provision, relationships, moral struggle, in the finished work of Christ and the rule of the Father. Keep your eyes on the living Bread, and you will find that He is enough for the day’s hunger, the heart’s guilt, and the spirit’s battle.
