Father not stepping up

Dear God, I need help. My kids' dad doesn’t support them. He just left them and my kids are suffering. Please help us. In Jesus' name. Amen

We hear your heartache and the deep pain your children are experiencing, and we lift this burden before the Lord with great compassion. The abandonment of a father is a heavy wound, one that leaves scars not just on the heart but on the very sense of security and worth that every child deserves. Scripture tells us in Psalm 68:5 that God is "a father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows." He sees your children’s tears, and He will not leave them comfortless. We stand in the gap for you and your little ones, declaring that God is their true Father, the One who will never forsake them.

First, we must address the brokenness of this situation with truth. Ephesians 6:4 commands fathers, "Do not provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Your children’s father has fallen short of this calling, and his absence is not just a personal failing but a violation of God’s design for family. We rebuke the spirit of abandonment and irresponsibility that has taken hold here, and we pray that the Holy Spirit would convict him of his duty to love, provide for, and spiritually lead his children. If he is a believer, we ask that God would break his heart and turn him back to his family. If he is not, we pray for his salvation, that he would come to know Christ and repent of his ways.

To you, dear sister, we say this: You are not alone in this battle. Proverbs 31:25 describes a woman of noble character as one who is "clothed with strength and dignity," and that is what God is weaving into you even now. You are carrying a weight that was never meant to be yours alone, but God will sustain you. We encourage you to lean into your church family, your brothers and sisters in Christ, who can come alongside you with practical help, prayer, and encouragement. James 1:27 reminds us that "pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction." Seek out those who will live out this verse for you and your children.

We also pray for your children’s hearts. The absence of their father may leave them with questions, anger, or even a distorted view of who God is. We ask that the Lord would heal their wounds and replace their pain with His perfect love. Teach them, Lord, that You are their Father who will never leave them nor forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6). Help them to see that their worth is not defined by their earthly father’s failures but by the fact that they are fearfully and wonderfully made in Your image (Psalm 139:14). Surround them with godly men—pastors, uncles, mentors—who can speak life into them and model what a father’s love should look like.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this mother and her precious children. Lord, You see the pain of abandonment they are enduring, and You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). We ask that You would be their Provider, their Protector, and their Peace in this storm. Father, we rebuke the spirit of neglect and irresponsibility that has taken root in this family, and we pray for the father of these children. If he is lost, draw him to Yourself, Lord. If he is a believer, convict him of his sin and turn his heart back to his family. Let him see the damage his absence is causing and give him the courage to repent and step into the role You have called him to.

For this mother, Lord, we ask for supernatural strength. Give her wisdom to raise these children in the fear and admonition of the Lord, even as she carries the weight of both parents. Provide for their every need—emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Open doors of opportunity for her, and surround her with a community of believers who will uplift and support her. Let her children see Your faithfulness through her, that they may know You are their true Father.

Heal the hearts of these little ones, Jesus. Comfort them in their sorrow, and replace their pain with Your perfect love. Help them to forgive their father, not because he deserves it, but because You have forgiven us so much (Colossians 3:13). Raise up godly men in their lives who can speak truth and encouragement into them. Let them grow up knowing that they are deeply loved by You, and that their identity is found in Christ alone.

We declare that this family will not be defined by this brokenness, but by Your redemption. We speak restoration, healing, and hope over them. May Your name be glorified in their lives, and may they become a testimony of Your faithfulness to others who are walking through similar pain. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Hold fast to the promises of God, dear sister. He is working even when you cannot see it, and He will not waste your pain. Keep your eyes on Him, and trust that He will carry you and your children through this valley. You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.

We're here with you, sister. We know the weight you carry, the pain you feel, and the questions that keep you up at night. We want you to know that you're not alone. God sees your children's tears, and He's right there with them, comforting them in their sorrow. He's also with you, strengthening you, and equipping you to be their rock in this storm.

We've been praying for your husband, too. We're asking God to soften his heart, to convict him of his responsibility, and to draw him back to his family if he's a believer. If he's not, we're praying for his salvation, that he would come to know Christ and repent.

We're also praying for your children. We're asking God to heal their wounds, to replace their pain with His love, and to help them understand that their worth is not defined by their father's actions, but by the fact that they are fearfully and wonderfully made in God's image.

Remember, dear sister, God is your provider, your protector, and your peace. He's got you and your children in the palm of His hand. Trust in Him, lean on Him, and keep your eyes fixed on Him. He's working even when you can't see it, and He will not waste your pain. You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.

Let's keep lifting this family up together, okay? We're in this with you.

Seek His Face and Presence not just His hand. In his Presence is everything you need. This does not mean you can have any material thing, perfect spouse because you asked for it in Jesus Christ name. You will have your needs, some of your wants, and difficult trials. The difficult trials are supposed to refine your character and make you more like Jesus. He is more interested in getting you to everlasting life and having your heart in the right place than he is in giving you gifts. It’s eternal life he’s concerned with.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy.

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
