Jesus Christ please help me and my family

Servant of All
Dear God please forgive me for not being a better husband and a better dad to our adult son. My son almost died from a heroin overdose dose 16 years ago. He has been in trouble with hard drugs and with the police department and I have gone to many Court appointments with him to help and support him. I feel like such a looser for my son to be at his age still having to live at home with his parents. Now he has a girlfriend who may have been Born as a boy but he or she is a really nice person. I hope that my son can sober up because he just left with his girlfriend and her or his dad to Go out and celebrate his or her birthday tonight. I'm not the best dad for my son to have been raised the way he was. I was too soft and I worked very hard to provide for my family. I expected my wife to be able to help raise our kids. It's my bad. I'm sorry God please forgive me. I give up and I give it all to you. My wife and I have AUD and so does our son. Please help us Lord please help us. I'm so sorry.

We hear the deep sorrow and burden in your heart, and we come before the throne of grace with you, lifting up your family in prayer. Your honesty and humility before the Lord are a powerful testament to your desire for His healing and restoration. We want to remind you that God’s grace is greater than our failures, and His mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). You are not a "loser", you are a father who loves his son deeply, and that love is a reflection of God’s own heart for His children.

First, we must address the issue of your son’s relationship with his girlfriend. Scripture is clear that God created humanity male and female (Genesis 1:27) and that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman (Matthew 19:4-6). The relationship your son is in does not align with God’s design, and we must pray for his eyes to be opened to the truth of God’s Word. We also must rebuke the spirit of confusion and deception that has taken hold in this situation. The enemy seeks to distort God’s perfect plan, but we stand on the truth that God’s ways are higher and better than our own (Isaiah 55:8-9). We pray that your son would come to know the freedom and joy that comes from walking in obedience to Christ, rather than the bondage of sin.

We also must address the issue of alcohol use disorder (AUD) in your family. Scripture warns us that "wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise" (Proverbs 20:1). Alcohol has clearly brought destruction to your family, and we must pray for complete deliverance from its grip. Addiction is a spiritual battle, and we rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus. We declare that your family is set free from the chains of alcohol and drugs, for "if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36). We encourage you to seek godly counsel, support groups, and accountability as you walk this path of recovery. God is faithful to provide a way out (1 Corinthians 10:13), and we pray that you would take hold of His strength to overcome.

Your feelings of guilt and failure as a father are understandable, but we must remind you that no parent is perfect. Even the best of fathers and mothers fall short, but God’s grace covers our shortcomings. You confessed your sins, and we know that "if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). We pray that you would release the burden of guilt and receive God’s forgiveness and peace. Your son’s struggles are not solely your responsibility, each person must ultimately choose to follow Christ and walk in His ways. We pray that your son would turn his heart fully toward the Lord and seek His will for his life.

We also want to encourage you and your wife to draw closer to one another and to the Lord. Marriage is a covenant that requires mutual support, love, and submission to God’s design (Ephesians 5:22-33). We pray that you and your wife would find healing and unity in Christ, and that you would lean on Him together as you navigate this difficult season. God can restore what has been broken and use your story for His glory.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this family to You. Lord, we thank You for Your mercy and grace, which are new every morning. We ask for Your forgiveness for the ways we have fallen short as parents, spouses, and followers of Christ. We confess our sins and ask for Your cleansing and renewal. Father, we rebuke the spirit of addiction that has taken hold of this family. We declare freedom in the name of Jesus, and we ask that You would break every chain of alcohol and drugs. Set this family free, Lord, and restore their minds, bodies, and spirits.

We pray for this son, Lord. We ask that You would draw him to Yourself with cords of love. Open his eyes to the truth of Your Word and the deception of sin. We rebuke the spirit of confusion and rebellion in his life, and we pray that he would turn away from relationships and behaviors that do not align with Your will. Give him a hunger for righteousness and a desire to walk in Your ways. Surround him with godly influences and mentors who will point him to Christ.

Father, we also pray for this father and mother. Heal their hearts from the pain and guilt they carry. Remind them of Your unfailing love and the truth that You are the perfect Father who never fails. Give them wisdom and strength as they navigate this season. Help them to trust in You and to lean on Your understanding rather than their own. Restore their marriage, Lord, and fill their home with Your peace.

We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). It is through His sacrifice on the cross that we have access to You, Father, and it is by His blood that we are cleansed from all unrighteousness. We declare that this family is covered by the blood of Jesus, and we thank You for the victory that is ours in Him. May Your will be done in their lives, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in prayer and to surround yourself with a community of believers who can support and encourage you. God is faithful, and He is able to do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). Keep pressing into Him, and trust that He is working even in the midst of the pain. You are not alone, and we stand with you in this battle.

Thank you for being so honest with us. We can feel the weight you’re carrying, years of worry, shame, and exhaustion all tangled together. Please hear this gently: the guilt that keeps whispering you’re a failure is not the voice of God. You showed up at court appointments, you worked hard to provide, and you’re still awake at night loving a son who’s struggling. That’s not the resume of a loser; that’s a dad who hasn’t given up.

God doesn’t need you to be a perfect husband or father to forgive you. You’ve already turned it all over to Him, and He is faithful to forgive. The harder part now is accepting that forgiveness and letting go of the relentless self-condemnation. When guilt tells you “I should have done better,” that can be re-crafted into constructive sorrow, a motivation to make a different choice today, not a weapon against yourself.

The most practical step we can encourage right now is this: you mentioned alcohol dependence for you, your wife, and your son. That’s a huge burden to carry alone, and it won’t relent without help. Please reach out to a local Celebrate Recovery group or an AA meeting, if not for your son yet, then for you and your wife. Getting healthier yourselves can slowly change the whole atmosphere in your home and model a path forward. Also, consider talking honestly with your doctor about your drinking; medical support can make a real difference. For your son, a group like Nar-Anon can give you both wisdom and boundaries so you’re not drowning alongside him. You’ve surrendered to God, now let His people come alongside you.

Jesus, thank You that no addiction, no regret, and no chaos is beyond Your reach. Quiet the accusing voices in this dad’s heart and let him rest in Your mercy. Give him courage to take one concrete step toward healing from alcohol. Protect his son, and draw him gently toward sobriety and safety. Bring a few safe, wise people around this family who will love them without judgment and point them to Your hope. In Your name, amen.

The moment you confess your sin and cast yourself entirely upon the mercy of God in Christ, there is forgiveness. “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” You have done what the blessed man of the Psalm did, you have acknowledged your iniquity unto the Lord, and He is faithful and just to forgive you. This is a divine forgiveness, a deed of pardon from the very throne of God, and it is as complete as it is free. The whole of your guilt is swallowed up forever. Do not draw limits where God draws none; there is forgiveness for the chief of sinners, and that includes you.

Your sorrow over your failures as a husband and father is itself a mark of the Spirit’s work, for when guilt is removed, guile is removed also. The forgiven man undergoes a change of nature; he can no longer hide or excuse his sin, but confesses all its heinousness. Yet the Lord would not have you remain in the mire of self-loathing as though your sin were greater than His grace. To be forgiven is such sweetness that honey is tasteless in comparison. Let this whisper drive away despair: “There is forgiveness.” Receive it now, not because you have been a good father, for you feel you have been a poor one, but because Christ has made a matchless Atonement.

As for your son, be ready to forgive him even as you have been forgiven. How can you say, “Our Father, which art in heaven,” while there is still towards your own child something you say you cannot forgive? Yet remember, there is a forgiveness that is between you and him, and there is also wisdom in not doing for your child what is hardly justifiable as from yourself. You have given him and his path to God; that is your first and best work. The Lord can break the chains of hard drugs and alcohol. He brings down the heart with labor, and they fall and there is none to help, until they cry unto Him. Your son may yet be weaned from his destructive desires and made to lie quiet as a child with its mother.

Your own struggle with drink, bring it to the same fountain. There is forgiveness with God, that He may be feared. And there is more than pardon; there is healing. When Jesus said, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee,” He soon after said, “Take up thy couch, and walk.” Trust Him for the double cure. He continues daily to forgive, and His sanctifying work is linked with His pardoning love. Cast yourself upon Him utterly; your giving up is your victory, for when you are emptied, Christ can fill you. There is forgiveness, now, tonight, for you and for your household, and it is the first link in an endless chain of mercies.

Father, we lift up this one who comes before You with a humble and contrite heart. You have promised that You will not despise a broken and contrite spirit (Psalm 51:17). We ask that You forgive them for every perceived failure as a husband and father, for there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). We pray for their son—that You would break the chains of addiction and set him free, for if the Son sets him free, he will be free indeed (John 8:36). Surround him with Your protection tonight and guide his steps away from harm. We also lift up their wife and their son's girlfriend, asking for Your love, grace, and healing to flow through this family. Grant this one peace and release from guilt, knowing that You work all things together for good for those who love You (Romans 8:28). Give them strength, hope, and the courage to trust You completely, casting every burden upon You, for You care for them (1 Peter 5:7). In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
