The prayer that has ascended from your household is one that finds a ready echo in the heart of God, for He delights in the union of His people. When you ask Him to bind your family together in unity, patience, and love, you are asking for that which is most precious in His sight, a faint but true reflection of the unity He shares with His Son. The love that must hold you firm is no mere domestic affection, but a spark of the eternal flame of God's love for you. May it never be quenched! When the storm howls and the winds beat upon your house, it is this divine love, shed abroad in your hearts by the Holy Spirit, that proves itself abounding and abiding.
And what is this patience for which you plead but a portion of the patience of Christ? Marvel that omnipotent love should restrain omnipotence itself; and see in the life and death of our Lord Jesus the almighty patience that bears with the frailties of His own. To be directed into this patience towards one another is to drink deeply from the well of salvation. You cannot divide the love of God from the patience of the Savior, what God has joined together, let no man put asunder. As you each draw near to Christ, His patience will take root in the soil of your home, and the sharp edges of trial will be softened by grace.
Yet remember, the unity you seek is the unity of the Spirit, and it must never be purchased at the cost of truth. We dare not commit the sin of quenching the Holy Spirit even with the view of promoting peace. True binding together comes not by suppressing the truth of God, but by publishing it abroad in lives of holy love. Look for that spiritual unity which exists only among those who have been born into the family, washed in the blood, and passed from death unto life. Divisions in homes never begin with those full of love to the Savior. Therefore, live near to Christ, for this is the best way of promoting unity.
Let your love be no matter of mere talk, let it be real, practical, active, a love which never fails. Consider the intensity of Jonathan’s love for David, a love that was wonderful, surpassing the love of women. May we see more of this kind of affection among Christian families, loving each other for Christ’s sake and because of the grace of God they discern in one another. Our love for the Lord makes us long to see our household love Him too, and in loving Him, we find ourselves bound more tightly to each other. The strings of many hearts, when tuned to the same sweet note of praise, create a holy harmony.
Now, give your love full exercise, for it shall grow thereby. You ask, “Where shall I exercise the contemplation of my love, to make it grow?” Look to the manger, to the cross, to the empty tomb, to the throne of intercession. Is not your love refreshed? Does not a flight over those illimitable plains of the ether of love inflame your heart and compel you to delight yourself in the Lord? Here is the true food of love, and feeding upon Him, you will find your hearts enlarged towards one another. When you know that every mercy, both temporal and spiritual, comes from that love, gratitude becomes the golden clasp that holds the family chain together.
Go, then, to the mercy seat again, and say to your Savior, “Lord, I do love You. Teach me to love You more, and teach me to love as You have loved me.” Rehearse His deeds of grace towards you, and you will find your patience replenished and your affection for one another deepened. The Lord loves you and makes the most of you; now show your love by joying in Him, even in the storm. For He has said, “Eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.” Thus, drinking deeply of His love, your family shall be bound together with ties that tempests cannot sunder, for they are fastened not to an earthly anchor, but to the Rock of Ages cleft for you.
