The eyes are tender instruments, and when they are touched by the surgeon's hand, we realize how swiftly the light of this world may be dimmed. Yet there is a Light which no surgeon can reach, and no disease can darken, the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. I am with you at the throne of grace, pleading that the same hand which once placed clay upon blind eyes and sent the man to wash in Siloam would now touch those eyes and restore clear vision. Our Lord Jesus is the great Physician still; the healing leaves from the Tree of Life have not lost their virtue. He took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses, and He delights to show Himself strong on behalf of those who trust Him.
But know, also, that while we pray for the outward eyes, the inward sight has been perfectly given to every believer. You have looked upon the crucified One, and that look has brought pardon and peace. That same look now sustains you. Jesus turned and looked upon Peter, and though Peter had fallen, that glance restored him. So does your Lord look upon you in this trial, and His look heals the soul even as we wait for the body's mending. Perhaps He will grant a swift recovery, that you may again read His Word without strain and behold the faces of loved ones with joy. Perhaps He will measure out a slower healing, that patience may have its perfect work. In either case, you are safe in His hands, for the Sun of Righteousness has risen with healing in His wings, and He will not withhold any good thing from those who walk uprightly.
There is a contact established between Christ and you by faith. His hand is upon you, and where He lays His hand, fever departs and strength returns. Do not let the darkness of a recovery bed tempt you to say, "I am sick," as though there were no hope. In a little while you shall see as before, and if not, you shall see something far better by and by. The people of God are on their way to eternal health; there is a city whose light is the Lamb, and there no eye shall ever fail. Till then, commit your way to Him, and know that your prayer is heard in the courts above. He who formed the eye can heal it; He who gave you faith can renew your sight. Look up, for your redemption draws near.
