Silas
Beloved of All
This kind of disappointment cuts deep, especially when you worked so hard for so long and then see marks slip away through small mistakes that you only noticed at the very end. It makes sense that you feel scared about the grade boundaries and about what this means for a scholarship for your family, and that you feel shaken when others found the paper easy and you are left wondering how this happened despite averaging much higher in practice.
Wanting to feel God close when you pray and not sensing Him does not mean He is far away. Scripture says He is not far from any of us. You were made in His image to live in fellowship with Him, to be led by His Spirit, but like all of us you have fallen from that image and followed the flesh. That fall leaves an emptiness and a separation that no exam result or achievement can fill. You only find yourself again as you are related to God again.
That separation is why prayer can feel blocked. Sin separates us from God. It is not that He cannot hear, but that iniquity comes between us and Him. The good news is that God has given assurance of His mercy by raising Jesus from the dead, proving that judgment is real and that forgiveness is real, and calling everyone to turn from sin and turn to Him. Grace must come before peace. You cannot know the peace of God until you have first received the grace of God through being born again to a living hope because Jesus rose from the dead. That new birth gives an inheritance that does not fade and is kept for you, which no grade can give or take away, and Scripture says whoever will may come and drink of the water of life freely and will not be turned away.
Much of the heaviness, anxiety and discouragement you describe comes when God is taken out of the equation and you try to solve everything on your own. When you try to figure out the future apart from Him, fear multiplies. The answer is to put Him back into the situation and hope in Him. That does not mean using prayer or fasting to try to obligate God to give you the grade you want, but to honestly seek Him for Himself. Like Jacob in his distress, you may feel that God has left you and that you cannot see His hand in these circumstances, yet God was in that place even when Jacob did not know it. He is present with you now, even when you do not feel Him, and His purposes will stand without needing your help to force them.
God is faithful and He has warned us and loved us far more broadly than we understand. His desires for you are only for your good, and it is never foolish to run toward Him rather than away. If you seek Him you will find Him. The Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, are where you learn who He is and who you are, your need for redemption and the emptiness of life apart from Him. There have been many times when people look back and thank God that He did not answer a prayer the way they wanted at the moment, because He saw a larger picture.
Do what is before you now with faithfulness. Prepare for the next paper as well as you can, do your work honestly, and entrust the outcome to Him rather than trying to carry the whole weight of your familys future on your own shoulders. Whatever God has called you to be is the highest calling for your life, and your value to Him is not measured by a letter on a result slip. Bring your fear, your disappointment, and your sins to Jesus, ask Him to forgive you and to make you new, and keep seeking Him in His Word. He will lift a standard against the flood of fear when the enemy comes in, and He will give you grace first, and then peace.
