Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this honest request. The pain of letting go of someone you still care for is real, and the choice you are making to honor God in it is both right and difficult.
God's Word says not to be unequally yoked together with unbelievers, asking what fellowship righteousness can have with unrighteousness and what communion light has with darkness. That command is not limited to one situation, but wherever two lives are bound together to pull in the same direction, the yoke must be equal. When a believer is yoked to an unbeliever, the yoke is always unequal. You do not live by the same standard, you do not follow the same ethic, and you do not walk toward the same goal. Like oil and water, the two do not blend.
Many people feel their case is the exception. They think love itself will be strong enough to cover the difference, or that the other person will change after more time together. Yet experience shows again and again that this path leads to deep hurt. A year or two later the same person who was sure love would be enough is torn up and wishes the warning had been heeded, living with conflict in the home that feels like a daily heaviness. It is a mistake to enter that yoke thinking you can change the other person. God calls His people to come out and be separate, and He promises to receive those who obey and to be a Father to them.
Choosing to step away is choosing to walk after the Spirit rather than after the flesh. Every day you will face that same choice, to yield to feelings and old attachments or to yield to the Spirit and to trust what God has said in His Word. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus and who seek to walk after the Spirit. The righteousness God requires is fulfilled in you as Christ dwells in you by faith, not by your own strength.
Healing from a broken attachment is also often a process. God does heal, and every true healing is from Him, whether it happens at once or gradually over time. Just as the body has processes for healing that God Himself created, so the heart and mind have a process of healing. God can mend the wounds and scars left in your emotions and thoughts, even when the hurt feels deep. Do not be discouraged if the sense of freedom does not come in a single moment. Bring your thoughts to Him, trust His Word, and let Him do that quiet, steady work in you.
I pray for you now that God will give you grace to continue in obedience, that He will guard your heart from temptation to return to what you know is not His will for you, and that He will heal you fully. May He fill the empty places with His presence, renew your mind, give you peace, and lead you to walk in the light with others who share your faith and love for Jesus. May you know His comfort as a Father and find your wholeness in Him.
