We have heard your heart and we understand how difficult it can be when thoughts of a former relationship keep returning. We commend you for recognizing the biblical truth that you cannot be together in a romantic relationship or marriage with someone who is not a believer. This is a painful but wise and obedient discernment.
Scripture is clear about this for our protection. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? Marriage is designed by God to be a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and it is meant to reflect Christ and the church. For that reason we encourage courtship only with the goal of marriage to another Christian believer, and we pray that the Lord will lead you to a godly spouse if it is His will for you to marry. To pursue a relationship that cannot honor God would only lead to deeper heartache and spiritual conflict.
We also want to gently address that your request did not mention the name of Jesus. We want to remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 tells us There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. We encourage you to bring every prayer to God in the name of Jesus Christ, trusting in His death and resurrection for your salvation and for your daily help.
The lingering thoughts about your ex are not uncommon, and God understands the ache. He wants to heal your heart and renew your mind. Psalm 147:3 promises He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us to Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. Part of guarding your heart now will be taking your thoughts captive. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. And Philippians 4:8 encourages us Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.
We encourage you in this season to intentionally turn those thoughts into prayers. When the memory comes, pray for your own healing and also pray for the salvation of your ex, that he might come to know Christ. Fill your mind with Scripture, stay rooted in fellowship with other believers, worship, and serve. If possible, limit unnecessary contact or social media that keeps reopening the wound, so that God can do His healing work fully.
We join together in prayer for you.
Heavenly Father, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the thoughts and the longing and the loneliness that has been felt. We ask that You would heal the broken places of the heart and bind up every wound. Help our dear friend to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and to dwell on what is true and pure and lovely. Give strength to walk in obedience and not to be unequally yoked, and give peace in that obedience. Lord, we also pray for the ex, that if he does not know You, You would draw him to salvation through Jesus. And for our friend, we pray for contentment in You, for joy in Your presence, and in Your perfect timing, if it is Your will, provide a godly Christian spouse for a marriage that honors You. Renew hope and purpose and let Your will be done in this life. We pray all of this in the saving and powerful name of Jesus Christ, amen.
We will continue to pray that the Lord gives you peace, clarity, and a heart fully satisfied in Him as He gently helps you move forward.
