Good and Faithful Servant
I broke up with an ex boyfriend recently due to us being unequally yoked. At the end of the day, we can't be together because he is not a Christian. Maybe if God wanted, somehow it can happen that he becomes a Christian and we end up together but it doesn't seem that way right now. Starting today, I no longer want to talk about this situation anymore or fixate on it. It is obvious this is not the person God wants me to marry. Pray for me about this. Thank you.

We have heard your request and we stand with you in this decision, and we commend you for obeying the Lord in a very difficult area. It is painful to end a courtship, but you have chosen faithfulness over feelings, and that honors God. We believe that being a boyfriend or girlfriend is courtship with the goal being marriage to another Christian believer, and marriage itself is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman that is meant to reflect Christ and the church. For that reason we strongly endorse pursuing marriage only in the Lord.

Your understanding that you were unequally yoked is exactly what Scripture teaches. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? Amos 3:3 asks How can two walk together unless they have agreed? A marriage where one follows Christ and the other does not cannot have the spiritual unity God requires, and to continue would be to compromise your walk with Him. We also want to gently encourage you as you move forward to keep any future courtship pure and set apart for marriage, honoring God with your body and heart, as He calls us to flee fornication and to pursue holiness.

We understand the lingering thought that maybe if God wanted, he could become a Christian and you could end up together. While God is certainly able to save anyone, we encourage you not to fixate on that possibility or hold your heart open to a return, but to fully surrender this man and this outcome to the Lord. Your desire starting today to no longer talk about this situation or fixate on it is wise and healthy. We want to help you release it completely and trust God's will. Proverbs 3:5-6 says Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. And Psalm 37:4 says Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. As you delight in Him, He will shape your desires and in His time provide a godly spouse if it is His will for you to marry.

We noticed you spoke of God and being a Christian, but you did not mention the name of Jesus Christ in your request, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and salvation. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are saved and that our prayers are heard. We encourage you to keep coming to the Father in the name of Jesus with confidence.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up our sister to You. We thank You for giving her the courage and obedience to end a relationship that was not in Your will, even though it has brought pain. We ask You to heal her heart, for Psalm 147:3 says You heal the broken in heart, and bind up their wounds. Grant her Your peace that surpasses all understanding to guard her heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus as Philippians 4:6-7 promises. Help her to not fixate or look back, but to fix her eyes on You, to delight in You daily, and to trust Your perfect plan for her life and for marriage. Guard her from loneliness and temptation to return, and prepare her for a godly husband who loves You above all else if it is Your will for her to marry. Give her hope, joy, and contentment in this season of surrender. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus, our only Savior and mediator, amen.

Thank you for letting us pray with you in this. It takes real clarity and courage to step away from someone you care about because you want to honor God with your future marriage, and we hear both the resolve and the ache in what you wrote.

Wanting to stop talking about it and fixating on it starting today makes a lot of sense. Grief does not always mean doubt, and choosing not to replay the what-ifs is a kind way to steward your heart right now.

One thing that has helped others in this kind of transition is to decide in advance what you will do when the thoughts come, since they will for a while. You might quietly name it, turn your attention to the present task, and reach out to one trusted friend or mentor who knows you want to move forward and can gently steer conversation elsewhere if you start to circle back. Staying engaged in ordinary rhythms, church, work, serving, rest, also gives your heart new ground to heal on.

We are praying for steadiness for you in the days ahead.

Father, we bring our sister to You and ask for Your peace to guard her heart and mind. Give her rest from rumination, comfort in any sorrow, and clear joy as she walks with You. Lead her steps and shape her future according to Your good will. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your resolve to walk in obedience is a good and right thing, and it is evidence of grace at work in your heart. To be unequally yoked is to be pulled in two directions, and Scripture warns us plainly against it, not to withhold good from us but to keep us in the way of peace. You have judged rightly that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman before God, and that such a union must be in the Lord. To turn away from a path that would draw you from Christ is not loss but wisdom, and though it brings sorrow for a season, it is far better to know the pain of obedience now than the deeper wound of going forward without God to be your Pilot.

You say you no longer wish to fixate on this matter, and in that desire there is also wisdom. When the heart has made its decision before the Lord, it need not go back. As pilgrims who desire a better country, we cannot go back and be content with things which once held us. If we become entangled again for a while, we are uneasy in it, for our home is elsewhere. Commit this day's trouble to God every morning and then go down into the world feeling that your Father knows it all. When nothing else is left you, God remains, and when your own strength fails, your strength shall be to sit still while God arises and becomes your arm every morning, your salvation in the time of trouble.

I will pray for you as you have asked, that you may go in peace.

Let us pray. O Lord our God, who is exalted and who pardons and heals through the blood of Jesus Christ, we thank You that salvation is by grace through faith in Him alone. We ask You to look upon this Your child who has chosen obedience at cost to herself. Grant her healing, for even the leaves of the tree of life are for healing, and the least thing about Christ is full of virtue to restore the wounded heart. Give her a quiet mind and a steadfast heart, that she may not be tossed about by memories or by vain imaginings, but may rest in Your purpose which shall not cease to stand. Teach her to trust You and not to fear, to love You who gives Yourself to be trusted, and to labor for You with a peaceful spirit. Let her hear Your dismissing word, Go in peace, and let that word keep her as she goes to her home, to her work, and through all the days to come, till You bring her to that city which You have prepared for those who are strangers here. Keep her from going back, and make her joy to be in her God, her true and eternal fountain when creature streams are dry. We ask also that You would be merciful to the one who knows You not, and if it be Your will, bring him to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. Above all, let Your will be done, and let Your peace which passes all understanding guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your heart with such honesty and clarity. Your decision to step away from a relationship where you were unequally yoked shows obedience to what Scripture teaches and a desire to honor the Lord above your own feelings, and that is not easy. It is right to take seriously that marriage is meant to be a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman who are united in Christ, and to recognize that this foundation matters.

I hear your resolve to no longer fixate on this situation or keep talking about it, and that desire to move forward is wise and healthy. It is good to place this in God's hands and to seek peace rather than continual revisiting of what has ended. I will join you in prayer for that very thing.

Let us pray together. Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and for the work You are doing in this life. I ask that You grant peace that guards heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and strength to keep the resolve not to dwell on what is past. Heal any hurt and loneliness, and help her to fix her thoughts on You and on the hope You give for the future. Lead her in Your will and give her confidence that Your plans are good and that You will provide according to Your wisdom. I also pray for this young man, that You would draw him to Yourself and that he would come to know salvation through Jesus Christ alone, according to Your grace. Above all, let Your perfect will be done in both lives. Give daily grace, comfort, and clear direction as she walks forward with You. In Jesus name, Amen.

Be encouraged to stay rooted in prayer, in the Word, and in fellowship with other believers who can support you in this season. God is faithful to sustain you as you trust Him.
