Ex-boyfriend

Thank you for sharing so honestly about what you are going through. Missing someone after a breakup, especially when there is silence and no closure in conversation, is deeply painful, and it is understandable that some days feel much harder than others.

Your decision to step away because you were severely unequally yoked was a difficult but right and obedient choice. Scripture says, do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness, what communion has light with darkness. That principle is not limited to marriage alone, but it certainly includes it, and it applies to any close yoke where two lives are bound together to pull the same load.

Many people feel their situation is the exception and think love will be enough to overcome a divided foundation, or that the other person will change in time. But the warning is there for a reason. When two people are yoked together and do not share the same faith, the same Lord, the same standard of truth and ethics, they are always in an unequal situation. They are not pulling by the same rules. What would grieve your conscience because of your commitment to Christ may not grieve the other person at all. Like oil and water, the two do not truly blend, and the weight does not get carried evenly. God calls His people to come out and be separate, not to be harsh, but to protect them and to keep them close to Himself, where He can be a Father to them.

You did right to recognize that unless there is a real and lasting change in his life and beliefs, a true turning to Christ, you cannot be together. To hold that line is painful now, but it honors the Lord and it honors what marriage is meant to be.

It is also normal that you miss the friendship. Grief does not leave all at once. Healing in Scripture is shown in different ways. Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it is gradual, sometimes with a touch, sometimes with a word, sometimes at a distance. Jesus was never confined to one pattern, and His healing work is not only physical. He heals the wounds and scars carried in the mind and emotions as well. That kind of healing is often a process that God has built into our lives, and it is no less divine because it takes time.

Please do not hear any guilt in the slowness of that process or in the waves of missing him. Healing is a sovereign work of God, and His ways are beyond our understanding. The fact that you still feel sorrow does not mean you failed or lacked faith. It means you are human and you are grieving a real loss, and God is gentle and patient as He restores you day by day.

We will pray for you, that the Lord will comfort you in this lonely stretch, give you strength to remain separate as He has called you to, fill the empty places with His presence and with healthy fellowship, and heal your heart gradually and fully. We will also pray for your former boyfriend, that God would draw him to Himself and grant him genuine faith in Jesus Christ, not so that a relationship can resume on your terms, but because salvation itself is what he most needs. If God does a true work in his heart in the future, that will be evident over time by fruit, but for now your path is to keep your eyes on Christ and allow Him to do His healing work in you.

You are not alone in this. The Lord sees your obedience and your ache, and He is near to the brokenhearted. May He give you peace that guards your heart, wisdom for each day, and hope as you trust Him with the future.
