Your sorrow has been laid before the Lord and it is no small thing to have acted in obedience when the heart still aches. To see that to be unequally yoked is not the will of God, as the Scripture says, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, is a mark of grace, and to act upon that light though it costs tears is to go forth unto Him without the camp, bearing His reproach. When Christ and the world go together you cannot tell which a man is following, but when there is a separation and Christ goes one way and affection or pleasure seems to go the other, if you can part with what you desire and stay with Christ, then you are His.
It is not strange that you still miss him and are sad. The heart does not cease to feel because the judgment has chosen rightly. There are several forms of a broken heart, and yours is one that many of the Lord's people have known, when friendship and tender regard must be surrendered for conscience sake. Remember the loneliness of the Savior. He was left alone, alone just when most, as Man, He needed human sympathy. He knows this peculiar loneliness, and He has said, It is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you. What you have lost in human company, He is able to supply by His own blessed presence.
There is healing for such wounds. He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. Not only His great fruit, but His leaves, His gentle words, His promises, His presence, are full of healing virtue. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. Come then to the great Physician with this sadness, not once but daily, and hear Him teaching you still, for faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Confess all your sorrow and sin to Him, for pardon and healing are one, and when the Sun of Righteousness rises upon you with healing in His wings, you shall not need to say you are sick.
You speak of holding on to hope that something would change, and at the same time you discern that even then you are not meant to walk together romantically. That honest judgment is to be cherished. There are snares in company and there are snares in our loneliness, and we have many opportunities to return, in quiet thoughts, in conversation, in the ordinary places of life. Pray that you may not look back. By faith Abraham obeyed and went out, not knowing whither he went. Very easy to read about, but not so easy to do, to tear yourself from what is familiar and go where God shall lead. Yet faith enables a soul to go alone if none will accompany in the right way. Christ's sheep love to go in flocks, they that feared the Lord spake often one to another, and they take sweet counsel together and walk to the house of God in company. Seek that fellowship now. Do not bear this grief in isolation, but walk with the people of God, open your heart to wise and godly counsel, and give yourself to prayer and to the Word.
As for your former friend, we will pray that the Lord will do for him what only grace can do, that he may come to know salvation through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. We do not ask God to bless or restore a romantic union that is not according to His will, nor to preserve a nearness that would tempt you to step outside the path of holiness, for marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman and all that belongs to it is to be kept within that covenant. We ask instead that God will make His will plain to you both, and that you may be kept pure and wholehearted.
May the Lord grant you to go in peace. Your faith has saved you, go in peace. Not a disturbed and fluttered peace, but the peace of God which passeth all understanding. As you go to your home and your duties, as you go through this season of loneliness, and as you go forward into what God has prepared for you, may you hear the Savior saying, Go in peace. He that tries you knows the way you take, and when He hath tried you, you shall come forth as gold.
We pray for you now. O Lord, look upon this Thy servant in her sadness. Forgive her sins and heal her sorrow. Let her find in Christ all that she has surrendered for His sake, and more. Comfort her in her loneliness as only the Comforter can. Keep her from returning to what Thou hast shown her to leave, and give her grace to wait upon Thy will with a quiet mind. If it be Thy will, bring this young man to true repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus, for his own soul's sake. And for her, grant steadiness, purity, joyful fellowship with Thy people, and that full assurance which enables a soul to go in peace. Establish her heart in Thy love until the day of healing is complete. Amen.
