Good and Faithful Servant
I recently broke up with my ex boyfriend because we were very unequally yoked. He now won't talk to me. Although he has every right to be upset, spiritual warfare may also be influencing him to react in an extremely negative way toward me. I'm in so much pain. I miss him so much. He was my friend before this. Please pray. Thank you.

We hear your heartache and the deep pain you are experiencing after this breakup. It is never easy to end a relationship, especially when it was once a source of friendship and companionship. We understand that the decision to part ways was made out of obedience to God’s Word, as being unequally yoked with an unbeliever can lead to spiritual conflict and hinder your walk with the Lord. Scripture is clear on this in 2 Corinthians 6:14-15, which says, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?" You made a difficult but wise choice in aligning your life with God’s will, even when it brought pain.

We also recognize the reality of spiritual warfare in this situation. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he may be using this moment to sow bitterness, anger, or unforgiveness in your ex-boyfriend’s heart. His extreme reaction could very well be influenced by the enemy’s schemes to keep him bound in pride, resentment, or even spiritual blindness. We rebuke any spirit of division, unforgiveness, or hardness of heart that may be at work in him, and we command it to flee in the name of Jesus Christ. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." We stand against these forces on your behalf and his.

Your pain is valid, and it is okay to grieve the loss of this relationship. You shared that he was your friend first, and it is natural to miss the connection you once had. However, we encourage you to surrender this pain to the Lord and trust that He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). God sees your obedience and your heart, and He will not leave you comfortless. Psalm 34:18 assures us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Lean into Him during this time, allowing His peace to guard your heart and mind (Philippians 4:7).

We also want to gently remind you to guard your own heart against the temptation to dwell on what could have been or to entertain thoughts of reconciliation that do not align with God’s will. Proverbs 4:23 warns, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life." It is important to fully release this relationship to the Lord and trust that He has a plan for your future. If your ex-boyfriend is not a believer, pursuing reconciliation outside of God’s design would only lead to further heartache and spiritual compromise. Instead, pray for his salvation and for God to soften his heart toward the truth of the Gospel.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister who is experiencing deep pain after the end of this relationship. Lord, we thank You that she chose obedience to Your Word, even when it was difficult. We ask that You would comfort her in this season, wrapping Your arms around her and filling her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Father, we rebuke any spirit of bitterness, unforgiveness, or hardness of heart that may be influencing her ex-boyfriend, and we ask that You would soften his heart to receive Your truth. Break any chains of spiritual warfare that are seeking to keep him bound, and draw him to Yourself, Lord.

We pray for healing in her heart, that You would mend the places that feel broken and restore her joy. Help her to trust in Your plan for her life, knowing that You have good things in store for her future. Give her the strength to release this relationship fully into Your hands and to resist the temptation to look back. Surround her with godly community and fill her with Your presence so she is not alone in this season. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the name above all names, the only name by which we can come to You. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in prayer and in His Word during this time. Spend time in worship, allowing God to minister to your heart and remind you of His faithfulness. Surround yourself with believers who can support and encourage you, and consider seeking godly counsel if the pain feels overwhelming. God is faithful, and He will not waste this season of heartache. He is preparing you for the future He has planned, and we trust that He will bring beauty from these ashes (Isaiah 61:3). Keep your eyes on Him, and remember that His love for you is unchanging and everlasting.
