Divorce

My husband ### has an affair with another woman. Asking me to give divorce. Regards ###

We are deeply grieved to hear of the pain and betrayal you are enduring in your marriage. Adultery is a grave sin that wounds the heart of God and violates the sacred covenant of marriage He established between one man and one woman. The Bible is clear: "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4 WEB). What your husband has done is not only a betrayal of you but a direct rebellion against God’s design for marriage.

Yet we must also remember that God’s heart is for restoration, where possible, and for His glory to be revealed even in brokenness. Jesus Himself addressed the hardness of divorce, saying, "What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate" (Matthew 19:6 WEB). Divorce was never God’s original plan, but because of the hardness of human hearts, it was permitted under certain circumstances, adultery being one of them (Matthew 19:8-9). However, this does not mean divorce is the only path or even the best path in every situation. We must seek God’s wisdom, not just legal or emotional relief.

First, we urge you to examine your own heart before the Lord. Are you willing to forgive, even if reconciliation seems impossible right now? Forgiveness does not mean excusing sin or remaining in an unsafe situation, but it does mean releasing the bitterness that can poison your soul. Jesus commands us, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15 WEB). This is not about your husband’s worthiness but about your obedience to Christ.

Second, we must address your husband’s sin directly. Adultery is not a mistake, it is a choice to reject God’s commands and pursue selfish desires. If he claims to be a follower of Christ, he must be called to repentance. The Bible warns, "No sexually immoral, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the Kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things, the wrath of God comes on the children of disobedience" (Ephesians 5:5-6 WEB). His request for divorce does not absolve him of his sin; it compounds it. We must pray for his conviction, repentance, and restoration, not just to you, but to God.

If your husband is unrepentant and insists on divorce, you are not bound to remain in a marriage where sin is celebrated rather than confessed. The apostle Paul writes, "But if the unbeliever departs, let there be separation. The brother or the sister is not under bondage in such cases, but God has called us to peace" (1 Corinthians 7:15 WEB). However, even in separation, your posture should be one of grace, not vengeance. You are still called to love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44).

We also want to gently but firmly remind you that your hope is not in your husband’s choices but in Christ alone. If you have not placed your faith in Jesus, we urge you to do so now. The Bible says, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16 WEB). Salvation is found in no one else, for "there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12 WEB). If you have already trusted in Christ, we encourage you to cling to Him in this storm. He is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister who is enduring the pain of betrayal and the threat of divorce. Lord, You see her tears, and You collect them in Your bottle (Psalm 56:8). You are the God who hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) and who heals the brokenhearted. We ask You to pour out Your comfort upon her now. Give her strength to stand firm in Your truth, even when her husband has strayed.

Father, we pray for her husband. Convict him of his sin, Lord. Break the hardness of his heart and lead him to genuine repentance. If there is any hope for restoration, we ask You to soften his heart and draw him back to You and to his wife. But if he remains unrepentant, we ask for Your protection over her, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Guard her heart from bitterness and her mind from despair.

Lord, we ask for wisdom for her in the days ahead. If divorce is the path she must walk, give her the courage to do so with grace and dignity, always pointing to Your love and redemption. Surround her with godly counsel and community. Remind her that her worth is not found in her marital status but in Christ, who loves her with an everlasting love.

And Father, if she does not yet know You as her Savior, we pray that this trial would lead her to the foot of the cross. May she find in Jesus the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who was betrayed yet chose forgiveness, the One who was broken yet brought healing. Amen.

In the days ahead, we encourage you to seek godly counsel from your pastor or a trusted Christian mentor. Do not walk this path alone. The enemy would love to isolate you, but God calls us to community. Lean on the body of Christ, and allow others to bear your burdens with you (Galatians 6:2).

Remember, too, that God can redeem even the most broken situations. The story of Hosea and Gomer in the Bible is a powerful picture of God’s relentless love for His unfaithful people, and His ability to restore what was lost. Your marriage may feel beyond repair, but nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

Finally, guard your heart against bitterness. It is easy to let anger take root, but the Bible warns, "See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God, and that no root of bitterness springs up to cause trouble and defile many" (Hebrews 12:15 WEB). Forgiveness is a process, and it may take time, but it is essential for your own healing. You may need to forgive your husband daily, just as Christ forgives you.

We stand with you in this difficult season, trusting that God will use it for His glory and your good. You are not forgotten, and you are deeply loved by the One who gave His life for you.

We want to thank you for the trust you placed in us to lift your heartbreaking situation before the Lord. It was our privilege to stand in agreement with you in prayer as you faced this painful trial, asking God to intervene in your marriage, soften hearts, and bring healing and restoration according to His will. We prayed fervently that He would guard your heart from bitterness, fill you with His peace, and give you wisdom for each step ahead.

If the Lord has moved in a way that brings hope, comfort, or reconciliation, we would be so encouraged to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a source of strength for others walking through similar struggles. If, however, the situation remains unchanged or feels even more difficult, please know we are still here to intercede on your behalf. We invite you to post this request again so we can continue to stand with you in prayer, believing that God hears the cries of His children and works all things together for good for those who love Him.

May the Lord surround you with His presence, remind you of His unfailing love, and give you the grace to trust Him even when the path ahead is unclear. We pray that He would draw near to you in this season, strengthen your faith, and use this trial for His glory. In Jesus’ Name, we continue to lift you up.
