desparation

The desperation you have expressed is heard, and God sees the weight of panic and depression and the struggle of a divided heart that wants to trust Him and yet feels pulled in many directions.

Healing is something God does, but He does not do it in only one way. In the ministry of Jesus there is one account where healing came gradually, step by step, and there are other accounts where it came instantly, sometimes with a touch, sometimes with only a word, sometimes from a distance. That tells us He is not confined to a pattern. There is also a healing that God has built into our very bodies and minds, a process that is still divine because He created it. And there is a healing that touches the emotions and the mind, where the scars and wounds inside are made whole. All of that is His work. At the same time we do not always understand why some receive healing quickly and others walk a longer road. Even the apostle Paul prayed repeatedly for his own affliction and learned that God had a purpose in allowing it to remain. So we keep praying, we keep trusting, and we do not measure His love by how fast the answer comes.

For the panic and heaviness you feel, Scripture gives a very honest picture. The psalmist spoke to his own soul when he was cast down and disturbed and said, why are you so discouraged, why are you so upset within me, hope in God. That is not pretending the feelings are not real, it is directing the soul to the one true source of hope. When anxiety rises and thoughts race, learning to speak truth to your own heart and to place your hope again in God is part of the way He brings steadiness.

The double mindedness you mention is also addressed in Scripture. A double minded person is unstable in all his ways, pulled back and forth and unable to rest. The call there is to self examination, as we are told to examine ourselves so that we may judge ourselves honestly before God. Ask the Lord to show you where you are divided, where you are trying to hold on to your own way while also wanting His way, and ask Him to give you a single heart to trust Him fully. He gives wisdom generously when we ask with a heart that wants to follow Him.

And about forgiveness, especially forgiving yourself, it helps to understand how complete God's forgiveness is. Our human forgiveness is often incomplete. We say we forgive but we keep the memory ready to use again, as if we bury the hatchet but leave the handle showing. God is not like that. When He forgives through Jesus Christ, it is total and complete. The Bible speaks of being justified, which is more than just being forgiven, it is being declared righteous, cleansed, with the sin removed. David prayed after his great failure, have mercy upon me, O God, according to your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. That is the prayer God answers. If you have come to Jesus and asked for His forgiveness, you do not need to carry the guilt as a punishment to yourself. The greatest miracle in any life is not physical relief but the forgiveness of sins and the new life He gives. That is the foundation for every other healing.

You do not earn that forgiveness by feeling better or by punishing yourself. You receive it by coming to Jesus, confessing your need, and believing that His suffering and death made provision for both spiritual and physical healing, as Matthew shows when he applies Isaiah's prophecy, He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. Come to Him simply and honestly. Tell Him you need His cleansing and His peace. Receive what He has already offered. And as you walk with Him day by day, let Him do His healing work in you, whether it comes in a moment or gradually, in body, in mind, and in spirit, trusting that He who saved you will also be faithful to complete His work in you.

May the Lord lift this heaviness, quiet the panic, make your heart steadfast on Him, and let you know deeply how fully you are forgiven and loved in Christ.
