Depression

Thank you for sharing honestly about the deep depression and oppression and the sense of emptiness you are feeling. We are praying for you, and we want you to know that God sees you in this place and cares about what you are carrying.

That feeling of a void inside is real, and Scripture speaks to it. There is a thirst in the human spirit that cannot be satisfied by emotional experiences alone. Many people try to move from one strong feeling or pleasure to the next hoping it will fill them, but the excitement fades and the emptiness returns. Jesus spoke to this when He invited anyone who is thirsty to come to Him and drink. What your soul is thirsting for most deeply is God Himself, and only a living relationship with Him through Jesus Christ can fill that inner place. As the psalmist said, my soul cries out for the living God.

The psalms also give language for the heaviness you describe. One psalmist spoke to his own soul in a time of discouragement and depression and asked, why are you cast down, why are you so troubled within me. Then he answered his own soul with the remedy, hope in God. That is not a denial of pain but a direction for it. To hope in God is to turn your heart toward Him again and again, to remind yourself of who He is and what He has promised in His Word, and to trust Him to be your help even when feelings are low. Lasting strength does not come from a momentary emotional lift but from building your faith on the facts of what God has said.

We also want to encourage you that God does bring healing, and He heals in many ways. Sometimes His healing is immediate, and sometimes it is gradual, working through a process over time. Both are from Him, because He is the one who created our bodies and minds and the natural processes that restore them. We do not always understand why one person experiences a quick lifting of a burden and another walks a longer road, but we do believe that God is able to heal the whole person, body, mind and spirit. The prophet Isaiah wrote that He has borne our griefs and carried our infirmities, and Matthew connects that promise to the healing work of Jesus. That includes the wounds and scars that settle in our thoughts and emotions. God can heal those inner places and bring wholeness where there has been hurt.

There is also a spiritual reality to oppression, and Jesus has authority over that realm. He has power over sickness, over the created world, and over evil spiritual powers, and they must obey Him. An empty place in the heart needs to be filled, and God wants to fill it with His own Spirit. Coming to Jesus, asking Him to fill you and to rule in your life, is the way that void is truly satisfied rather than left empty.

We encourage you to keep coming to Jesus each day to drink, to open the Scriptures and let His Word speak to your soul more than your feelings do, and to talk honestly to Him as the psalmist did. Getting emotional before God is not wrong, but a manufactured emotional high will not sustain you. What sustains is a steady trust in Christ and His love for you, that self giving love that goes beyond natural affection and holds you even when you feel nothing.

We are praying that God will lift this heavy oppression, that He will do a healing work in your mind and emotions whether quickly or step by step, and that you will experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from knowing Him close to you. May He fill the empty place with His presence and give you hope again as you wait on Him.

Father, we lift up this dear one to You who feels attacked by depression and emptiness. You know the weight they carry. We ask You to draw near, to forgive sins through Jesus Christ, to fill the void with Your Holy Spirit, and to bring healing to mind and heart. Bear their griefs and carry their burdens as You have promised, and teach them to hope in You day by day. Bring peace, light in the darkness, and strength for each step, in the name of Jesus, amen.
