Your prayer reflects a sincere love for this man and a right desire to see him walk in truth, and I join you in bringing him before the Lord.
We can thank God that He has made Himself known, and most fully through Jesus Christ. Our understanding of who God is and who we are must come from His own revelation, not from our feelings or desires or from what others tell us. In Christ we see the Father clearly, and in Christ we find our true identity as children of God, forgiven and made new through the cross. That is the only solid ground for knowing who we are.
Part of what makes sin and false teaching so dangerous is that it rarely looks completely false. Often much of what is said sounds true and good, which is how people are drawn in and deceived. Whether it is a voice that promises peace when there is no peace, or an influence that comforts a person in sin and keeps him from coming to Jesus who alone can save, the effect is the same. It keeps a person from repentance. Anything that takes over the mind and heart and passions and becomes a substitute for the true and living God is an idol, and it separates us from Him. A sinful relationship or lifestyle can become that kind of idol, promising identity and love while actually bringing control, fear, and bondage.
That is why Scripture continually calls us to repentance, not merely to sorrow but to a real turning. To turn away from idols and from every abomination and to turn toward the Lord. God alone can take a hard heart and make it soft, and give courage to walk on the narrow path that leads to life. The fear of the Lord is what gives understanding to depart from evil.
So I will pray with you for him. That the Lord will open his eyes to see Jesus clearly and to know who he is in Christ, that the false identity he has taken on will be exposed for what it is, that his heart will be softened and he will have courage to turn from sin, that the Lord will separate him from ungodly influences and from any relationship that controls and endangers him and that is outside God's design for marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, with sexual intimacy belonging only within that covenant. We pray that he will come to know the depth of God's love and also to see sin for what it is, that he will learn to fear the holy name of the Lord and choose to depart from evil, trusting that God's plans for him are far greater than his own desires.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the cross of Jesus and for Your mercy to all who believe. You know this man and You love him. Reveal Yourself to him through Your Son. Break through confusion and deception, give him a soft heart to hear Your voice, and lead him to repentance and freedom. Guard his life, deliver him from every controlling and destructive influence, and set his feet on Your narrow path for Your glory. In the name of Jesus we ask this, amen.
