Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing so honestly what is on your heart. Your desire to return to Jesus, to be free from addiction, to be safe from spiritual attack, to walk in obedience and to serve God again is a work of His grace drawing you back, and He hears that cry.
The Bible makes it clear that our real battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual powers. There is a constant spiritual warfare around us, and often we feel the impact of it in our daily lives. That is why the weapons God has given us are not physical or carnal. They are spiritual and they are mighty through God to pull down strongholds. The Word of God, faith, and prayer are the weapons by which we stand and by which the enemy is defeated. Prayer in particular is a great weapon God has placed in your hands, and He invites you to put on the whole armor He provides so you can stand firm.
Your longing for deliverance is exactly what Jesus came to give. He alone is the way of salvation, and through Him you can be set free from the grip of the enemy, not just delivered through trial but delivered from the power that has held you. Addiction is a stronghold, but God is stronger. As you turn fully back to Christ, ask Him daily for that freedom and lean on His strength rather than your own. Part of that turning is the discipline you mentioned, to read and study the Word of God. The Scriptures are divinely inspired and they are your daily bread and your sword in this battle. Make a simple, steady plan to be in the Word each day, even a short portion with prayer, and ask God to help you keep His commandments out of love for Him.
You also asked for help with anger and with watching over your mouth, and God cares deeply about this. The tongue is a small member but it carries great power. Scripture says it is like a fire, a world of wrong that can defile the whole life and set the course of life ablaze, and no person can tame it in his own strength. Out of the same mouth we can bless God and yet curse people made in His likeness, which should not be so. The highest use of the tongue is to praise God, and God also wants to use it to build up, to encourage, to comfort and to bring healing. A gentle answer turns away wrath while harsh words stir up anger, and being slow to anger quiets strife. A wholesome tongue is like a tree of life. You cannot control it alone, but when you yield to the Holy Spirit He can do for you what you cannot do for yourself and bring your tongue under His control. Pray each morning for Him to set a guard over your lips, to make you slow to speak and slow to become angry, and to help you speak only what is helpful and healing.
Let us pray for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this dear one before You. Thank You for the hunger You have placed in this heart to return to You and to serve You. We ask for deliverance from addiction and for freedom from every chain of the enemy. Cover this life with Your protection from every principality and spiritual attack and let those attacks be broken in Jesus name. Fill this heart anew with Your Holy Spirit, grant discipline and hunger for Your Word, and give strength to walk in obedience to Your commandments. Give victory over anger and set a watch over the mouth, so that the tongue may praise You and speak life and grace to others. Restore, strengthen and keep this life close to Jesus, and help each day to be lived for Your glory. Amen.
