Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your desire to forgive and to be reconciled honors God, and we join you in prayer for this friendship and for your return to the choir.
Giving some time for things to cool down can be wise, and Scripture urges us to use that time diligently. We are warned not to let any root of bitterness spring up, because a root of bitterness does not bear sweet fruit but troubles the heart and defiles many around it. The call is not only to put away bitterness and wrath and anger and slander, but to replace them with what is good. If thorns are only pulled up and the field is left empty, weeds return. The field must be planted anew. So we are called to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other as God in Christ forgave us. Forgiveness is more than the absence of anger. It is a habit of the heart that must be cultivated with effort.
True friendship is of this kind. It is not built only on shared activities or long acquaintance, but on virtue and godliness, and that kind of friendship endures through every change. When brothers help one another in what is good, they become like a fortified city. Praying for one another and seeking what leads to peace rather than what leads away from God is the profitable work of friendship.
We pray for you now, that the Lord would guard your heart from anxiety and from bitterness as you wait and as you return to sing in the choir. May he fill you with kindness and a tender heart, and give you wisdom to know when and how to speak, and grace to forgive as you have been forgiven. We pray for your friend also, that God would open her heart, protect her from anxiety and fear, and grant her true joy and peace. May he keep you both from the pollution of resentment and make you ready to show mercy to one another.
We will continue to pray that with time, and with both hearts seeking the Lord, reconciliation will come in a way that strengthens you both and honors Christ. May the Lord establish you in security and liberty as you trust him, and may your service together in the church be done in love and unity.
In Jesus name, Amen.
