Disciple of Prayer
I became christian 2 years ago and I still cant get rid of my lust, im so down right now, and its so bad that its changed my relationship with God, I barely pray or read the bible and I feel helpless, please pray for me and please ask God to renew my heart and mind

We hear the deep struggle in your heart, and we want you to know that your honesty before the Lord is the first step toward true freedom. The battle against lust is not an easy one, but it is one that God equips us to fight, and win, through His strength. You are not helpless, though it may feel that way right now. The enemy wants you to believe that you are defined by this struggle, but the truth is that you are defined by the blood of Christ, which has already broken the power of sin in your life.

The apostle Paul himself wrestled with this very thing, crying out, "For I don’t know what I am doing. For I don’t practice what I desire to do; but what I hate, that I do" (Romans 7:15). Yet he also declared, "Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord!" (Romans 7:24-25). You are not alone in this fight, and victory is not only possible, it is promised to those who walk in the Spirit.

First, we must address the root of this struggle. Lust is not merely a physical temptation; it is a heart issue. Jesus said, "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies" (Matthew 15:19). The battle begins in the mind and the heart, and that is where renewal must take place. You asked for God to renew your heart and mind, and that is exactly what we will pray for, because transformation comes through the power of the Holy Spirit.

But we must also be honest about the consequences of unchecked lust. It does not only affect you, it grieves the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30), it distorts the way you see others (as objects rather than image-bearers of God), and it weakens your relationship with the Lord. The fact that you feel distant from God right now is not because He has moved away from you, but because sin creates a barrier. The good news is that Jesus’ sacrifice has already torn that barrier down. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). You are not beyond His grace.

We also want to gently but firmly rebuke the lie that you are helpless. The Bible says, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13). The way of escape is not in your own strength, but in God’s. You must take practical steps: flee from temptation (2 Timothy 2:22), fill your mind with Scripture (Psalm 119:11), and surround yourself with accountability (James 5:16). If you are consuming media, relationships, or environments that feed this struggle, you must cut them off. Jesus said, "If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna" (Matthew 5:29). This is not a call to self-mutilation, but to radical obedience, whatever it takes to walk in purity.

Now, let us come before the Lord together in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, but also with hope, because we know that You are faithful to complete the work You have begun in us. Lord, we lift up our brother/sister who is struggling with lust, who feels distant from You, and who is weary in this battle. We ask that You would renew their heart and mind, washing them clean by the power of Your Word and Your Spirit. Break the chains of this sin, Lord, and replace the lies of the enemy with Your truth.

Father, we confess that apart from You, we can do nothing. But with You, all things are possible. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in purity and holiness. Give them the strength to flee temptation, the wisdom to guard their hearts, and the courage to seek accountability. Restore their relationship with You, Lord. Let them taste and see that You are good, and that Your ways are better than the fleeting pleasures of sin.

We declare over them that they are a new creation in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), that sin no longer has dominion over them (Romans 6:14), and that they are more than conquerors through Him who loved them (Romans 8:37). We rebuke the spirit of lust in Jesus’ name, and we command it to leave. We pray for a fresh infilling of Your Spirit, for a hunger and thirst for righteousness, and for a deep, abiding love for Your Word.

Lord, we also pray for godly community around them, believers who will walk with them, pray with them, and hold them accountable. Surround them with Your protection, and let Your peace guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

We thank You, Father, that You are not done with them. You began a good work in them, and You will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6). We trust in Your faithfulness, and we ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.

Do not lose heart, dear one. The fact that you are crying out to God in this moment is evidence of His work in you. The enemy wants you to isolate yourself, to hide in shame, and to believe that you are beyond help. But God is calling you to walk in the light, to bring this struggle into the open, and to let His grace transform you. You are not defined by your failures, but by the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Start small. Open your Bible today, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Pray, even if it feels empty at first. Seek out a trusted believer, a pastor, a mentor, a friend, and confess this struggle. You do not have to fight alone. And remember: "Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Philippians 1:6). God is not finished with you. He is making you new.

Thank you for being so honest about where you are. We hear how heavy this has felt, to love Jesus and still feel stuck in the same struggle, and how the discouragement has made it harder to pray or open your Bible. Feeling helpless does not mean you are alone or far from God, even when it feels that way.

What you described about lust changing your relationship with God makes sense. Lust can take a good desire and pull it outside of God's design, until it feels bigger than it should be and leaves shame behind. Shame then tells us to hide, which is often why prayer and reading fade. And that hiding keeps the heart and mind from getting the renewal you are asking God for.

We are praying with you for that renewal, for your heart to be made new and your thoughts to be shaped more and more by what is true and pure and good.

One steady next step that helps many is to break the isolation around this. Consider inviting one trusted, mature believer or pastor to know what you are carrying, not for guilt but for honest accountability and prayer. And rather than trying to fix everything at once, try a small, consistent rhythm again with God, even a few minutes a day to pray honestly and read, letting Him meet you there without pressure to be perfect.

Father, we lift our brother to You. You see his desire to walk with You and his weariness. Renew his heart and mind, draw him close again, and give him strength and hope for each day. Help him know Your nearness and Your grace as he keeps turning to You. In Jesus' name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The very heaviness and helplessness you describe is not a sign that God has cast you away, but often the evidence that His Spirit is still striving within you. A heart that did not belong to Christ would not grieve over lust, nor mourn over distance from prayer and the Word. That prick in the heart, painful as it is, is where true renewal begins, for the Lord wounds that He may heal and pierces the heart that He may pour in His grace.

You confess that you can scarcely pray and barely open the Bible. Hear this for your comfort, that God does not only hear words framed upon the lip. There is a prayer hidden away even when there is no mention of prayer, the prayer of inward thirst. When your tongue fails for thirst and your soul faints within you, that very fainting upon the bosom of Christ is a powerful pleading. The Lord has said, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. It is enough for Him to hear it, and He does hear the wordless groan which you cannot utter.

You also say you cannot find prayer in your heart. No wonder, for no man finds it there by nature. Every true heart prayer that is accepted of God first came from God. He puts it there by instructing us how to pray, by inclining us to pray, and by encouraging us to pray through His promises. The desire you have expressed, that God would renew your heart and mind, is itself a prayer that He has laid upon the floor of your heart for you to offer back to Him. Take it up, then, and plead it before Him just as it is, with all its weakness.

Do not, I beseech you, forsake the closet because your prayers feel feeble. That is the suggestion of the evil one. Though you should feel seven years of heaviness, still settle it in your mind that God is holy and that mighty prayer will yet prevail if it has but time. Go to Him in humility, as Jacob did, spreading your case before Him and pleading His own promises. He delights to be overcome by the faith looks of His children when they turn away from the world and look to Christ alone.

You are right to desire gracious renewal, for nothing that God has made is self existent and we cannot renew our own spirits. What poor starvelings saints become when they live without the diligent use of the Word and secret prayer. You feel your powerlessness, and that is the very reason to pray the brief but forcible prayer for renewal. Cry to Him to create in you a clean heart and to renew a right spirit within you, and to let His sanctifying fire go through and through your nature till He burns out of you everything contrary to His mind and will.

Know that lust, in all its forms, is not to be indulged or excused but to be fled from and mortified, for God has ordained that sexual intimacy belongs only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, and that purity of heart and body is His good design for your holiness and joy. Christ alone is your salvation and your strength to walk in that way, and He will not leave you to fight this battle in your own power.

We will bear you before the throne and have prayed for you, that the Lord would show His heart to you as you seek Him, that He would restore to you the joy of communion, give you hunger again for the Word, teach your feet to flee temptation, and daily renew your mind by His Spirit. Bring your bleeding heart to the bleeding heart of Jesus, for that alone can staunch its wound, and look to Him again and again until you find that your eyes, fixed upon Him, have overcome His heart with love.

Your honesty before God is precious and He hears you even now in this low and helpless feeling. The struggle you describe is real, and the weariness and distance you feel in prayer and in the Word are part of how sin tries to separate us from the One who alone can cleanse and restore us.

Scripture calls us to flee youthful lusts, and not only acts of fornication but every inordinate desire that comes from a heart not yet firmly grounded. The Lord Jesus taught that even looking with lust is already adultery in the heart, which shows how seriously God takes our inner life and how much we need His cleansing. To flee does not mean to linger and fight in your own strength, but to turn away, to remove what feeds the desire, and to bind your heart and mind to Christ instead. There are bonds that truly free us when we bind our thoughts to His Word and His ways.

God promises to create in us a clean heart and to renew our minds. He looks to the one who is humble and quiet and trembles at His word, not to the proud or self reliant heart. You do not need to be strong before you come to Him. Even when you are pained and can only cry out, that cry is prayer. Moses cried out and was heard, Hannah prayed with no voice heard and her heart was answered, and Abel's blood cried out to God. Your silent ache and your few whispered words are heard when your heart cries out to Him.

He also calls us to seek Him as one seeks lost gold, with labor and persistence, with hands lifted by night, asking, searching, knocking, and trusting that those who seek will find. Renewal is not instant but it is sure for those who keep seeking.

I have prayed for you and will continue to pray, asking God to renew your heart and mind, to create in you a clean heart, to give you strength to flee what tempts you, to bind your heart and mind in Christ, to restore your joy in prayer and in reading Scripture, and to lift the heaviness you feel. Ask Him each day for that clean heart, open the Bible even for a short passage and pray honestly as you are, and step away quickly from whatever stirs lust. God is able to establish you, to forgive, to cleanse, and to make you stand firm in purity and peace.
