Good and Faithful Servant
I will be breaking up with my boyfriend soon as I know we are unequally yoked (he is a professing Christian but involved in false teachings) and I know I never should have started this relationship but I feel I cannot do it yet because he's having a difficult week and I don't want to kick him when he's down (although I now feel that if God presents me with the opportunity to break up with him in spite of this difficult week, I have the courage to do so). Until I break up with him, I want to continue to be supportive so I'm trying not to show that there's anything wrong. But it's very hard because I feel deeply that this relationship needs to end immediately and I feel dishonest, like I'm living a lie and I feel trapped in trying not to indicate that anything is wrong. Please pray for me about this. Thank you.

We hear your heart and the weight of conviction you carry in this situation. The struggle you describe is real, balancing compassion for someone going through a difficult time while knowing that this relationship is not aligned with God’s will. You are right to recognize the danger of being unequally yoked, especially when false teachings are involved. Scripture is clear: "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). Even if he professes Christ, his involvement in false teachings is a serious matter, as it can lead him, and you, away from the truth.

Your desire to honor God by ending this relationship is commendable, and we sense the Holy Spirit working in you to do what is right, even when it’s hard. It’s also wise to consider his emotional state, but we must remember that delaying obedience to God’s will can sometimes prolong the harm, for both of you. Proverbs 27:6 says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend," and while it may feel like you’re wounding him now, it may be the very thing that leads him to examine his own walk with the Lord. Prolonging the relationship out of fear of hurting him could actually enable his spiritual drift, and that is not love.

The dishonesty you feel is also a sign of the Holy Spirit’s conviction. Living in a way that doesn’t reflect your true convictions is a heavy burden, and it’s not what God desires for you. Ephesians 4:25 reminds us, "Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor, because we are members of one another." Even in this difficult season, you can choose to walk in integrity, trusting that God will give you the words and the strength when the time comes.

We also want to gently address the terminology of "boyfriend" in this context. Scripture does not recognize casual dating relationships but instead calls believers to pursue marriage with intentionality and godly purpose. Courtship with the goal of marriage is the biblical model, and it should only be entered into with another believer who shares your commitment to Christ and His Word. This relationship, as it stands, does not meet that standard, and that is why your heart is rightly urging you to end it.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister who is carrying this heavy burden. Lord, we ask that You give her clarity and courage to do what is right in Your eyes. Strengthen her to walk in obedience, even when it’s difficult, and fill her with Your peace as she prepares to end this relationship. We pray that You would guard her heart from guilt or second-guessing, knowing that she is seeking to honor You. Father, we also lift up her boyfriend to You. If he is truly Yours, draw him back to the truth of Your Word and convict him of any false teachings he has embraced. If he is not Yours, we pray that this season would lead him to repentance and salvation. Give our sister wisdom in how to communicate with him, and may Your love and truth be evident in her words and actions. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come to You and the only name by which we are saved. Amen.

We encourage you to trust that God will open a door for this conversation when the time is right. You don’t have to have all the answers or the perfect words, just a heart surrendered to Him. When that moment comes, speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), and trust that God will work in both of your lives. You are not alone in this, and we are standing with you in prayer. May the Lord give you His peace as you walk forward in faith.

We hear the tension in your words, wanting to end the relationship clearly and kindly, yet feeling trapped by the timing. It’s painful when your integrity pushes you to act, and your compassion pulls you to wait. We don’t think your desire to be gentle is wrong, but living a lie day after day is heavy, and that weight often clouds the very clarity you’ve already received.

The truth is, difficult weeks come in every season. If you wait for a calm stretch that may never arrive, you risk prolonging your own dishonesty and giving him false hope. We love what’s true about courage: it isn’t a forced heroism, it’s the steady choice to move toward what must be done, trusting God with the outcome. You already know this must end; that insight is a gift. Now it’s about trusting Him with the when, even if the moment feels inconvenient for your boyfriend.

A practical step might be to quietly prepare a few simple, honest sentences that speak the truth without piling on his burdens. You don’t need to script a long conversation, just own that you believe you aren’t equally yoked, and that you’ve come to see this needs to end. Having those words ready can help you speak with kindness and clarity when God opens a door, even if the day still looks hard.

We pray for you now:

Lord Jesus, give our sister peace in the waiting and courage in the doing. When the moment comes, help her speak truth gently, without dishonesty or delay. Guard her heart from guilt and his from unnecessary hurt. Lead them both into Your best. Amen.

How long will you halt between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow Him. You know full well that the yoke you now bear is not the yoke of Christ. You have read the words, "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers," and your own spirit testifies against the false union you have made. What have you gained by casting off the easy yoke of Jesus and binding yourself to this burden of unease? A professing Christ entwined with false teaching is a garment spotted by the flesh; touch it not, lest you share in its defilement. To linger now out of pity for his worldly troubles is to sow a kindness that will reap a bitter harvest of greater sorrow. The ox that is yoked to an unwilling companion finds no rest, no furrow straightly drawn, no harvest gold. You cannot smooth his week by continuing a lie; you merely delay the severing that must come and heap up guilt upon your own head by false pretenses.

You say you feel dishonest, trapped, living a lie. That inward groan is not the whisper of morbid conscience; it is the Spirit of God striving with you, warning you that the foundation is rotten. A hypocrite’s path is paved with good intentions that feared man more than God. The wicked man’s epitaph is written: "Here lies one who had not courage enough to stand out against God." Oh, do not let that be the inscription over these sorrowful days! You are not cruel when you obey heaven's mandate. The truest compassion is to withdraw from a snare which entangles two souls. If he stumbles this week, let it drive him to the Cross whose shadow alone can heal. You are not his savior. The Breaker has gone up before you, Christ has burst the gates of death and hell; shall a difficult conversation be more terrible to you than Calvary? If you are in Christ, you wear the yoke that fits the shoulder without galling, the yoke of One who died for you and rose again. He adjusts His pace to the weakest of His flock. But this unequal bond with a man wrapped in error is a yoke of iron, chafing you both until you bleed with misery and compromise.

Therefore, wait not for a convenient season. The devil's best tool is the word "tomorrow." The Lord Himself presents you with courage when the hour calls; He who bids you break the false bond will furnish the word. The pastor’s heart leaps when he sees a saint refuse to blend into the world’s pattern, speaking the truth though reproach follow. Yours is no time for a trembling hand. Go, with the mace of the Cross in your fist, to smash this unholy peace. Be kind, but be clear. Be gentle, but be swift. Confess your own error in forging this link, and sever it without ambiguity. Till then, every moment of pretended calm is treason against your King. He shall gather all His own, and none shall pluck them from His hand. You are not left alone, but the Spirit of the living God shall bear you through. Now, while the truth burns in your bones, act.
