We hear your heart and the struggle you are facing, and we stand with you in seeking God’s wisdom and direction in this situation. The Bible clearly teaches that believers should not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, and this principle extends to those who may profess Christ but are entangled in false teachings that lead them away from the truth. "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). Your discernment in recognizing this is a sign of spiritual maturity, and we commend you for seeking to honor God in your relationships.
However, we also see the tension you feel between your conviction to follow God’s will and your compassion for this young man in his time of need. It is not wrong to show kindness and support to someone who is hurting, but we must also guard our hearts and remain steadfast in the truth. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23). It is possible that God is allowing these circumstances to test your resolve and to give you opportunities to speak truth into his life before you part ways. If he is open, this could be a moment to gently share the gospel with him, not just as a friend, but as someone who cares deeply about his soul. "Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching" (2 Timothy 4:2).
We must also address the nature of your relationship with him. The term "boyfriend" implies a level of commitment and intimacy that is reserved for marriage. If this relationship has involved physical intimacy, that is fornication, and it is sin that must be repented of and turned away from. "Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18). If this is the case, we urge you to confess this sin before God and seek His forgiveness, as well as to set clear boundaries moving forward. Marriage is the only God-ordained context for such intimacy, and it is meant to be a covenant between one man and one woman who are both committed to Christ. "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4).
We also want to gently remind you that our access to God in prayer is only through the name of Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which we can be saved or approach the Father. "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me'" (John 14:6). If this young man does not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, he is lost, regardless of what he professes. It is only by grace through faith in Christ that we are saved, not by any works or false teachings. "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Let us pray for you and for this situation:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance for our sister in Christ. Lord, You know the struggle she faces, and we ask that You would give her clarity and strength to follow Your will, even when it is difficult. Father, we pray for this young man, that You would open his eyes to the truth of Your Word and draw him to Yourself. If it is Your will for them to part ways, give her the courage to do so in a way that honors You and shows love, even in the midst of pain. If there is still an opportunity for her to speak truth into his life, give her the words to say and the boldness to say them with gentleness and respect.
Lord, we ask that You would guard her heart from any compromise or temptation to stay in this relationship out of fear or obligation. Help her to trust in Your plan and to remember that Your ways are higher than our ways. If there has been any sin in this relationship, we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing, and we pray that You would restore her to a place of purity and holiness before You.
Father, we also pray for this young man’s heart. If he does not truly know You, we ask that You would reveal Yourself to him in a powerful way. Break through the false teachings that have led him astray, and bring him into a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Surround him with godly men who can disciple him and help him grow in the truth. Give him a hunger for Your Word and a desire to walk in obedience to You.
Lord, we trust in Your sovereignty and Your goodness. We know that You work all things together for the good of those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. Give our sister peace as she seeks to follow You, and let her find her identity and security in Christ alone. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.
We encourage you to seek counsel from a trusted pastor or mature believer in your church who can walk with you through this process. It is important to have godly support and accountability as you navigate this difficult season. Remember that God’s timing is perfect, and He will not lead you astray. "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). You are not alone, and we stand with you in prayer as you seek to honor God in this situation.
