We hear your deep concern for your boyfriend and your desire to stand up for what is right in the workplace. It is commendable that you want to advocate for fair treatment, especially regarding medical conditions that should be accommodated with compassion. However, we must first address the nature of your relationship with this man. Scripture is clear that any romantic involvement outside of marriage is not in alignment with God’s design. In 1 Corinthians 7:2, it says, "But because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband." Courtship should always have the goal of marriage in mind, and any physical or emotional intimacy outside of that covenant is not honoring to the Lord.
That said, we understand your heart for justice and your desire to protect someone you care about. The Bible calls us to speak up for those who are mistreated, as Proverbs 31:8-9 urges, "Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are left desolate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and serve justice to the poor and needy." However, we must also be wise in how we approach such situations. In Matthew 10:16, Jesus tells us, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves."
Before taking action, we encourage you to pray for discernment and seek counsel from mature believers who can guide you in this matter. Retaliation in the workplace is a real concern, and while we do not believe God would have you remain silent in the face of injustice, we must also trust Him to protect you as you act in wisdom. Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, seeking Your wisdom and protection. Lord, You see the mistreatment happening in this workplace, and You care deeply about justice and mercy. We ask that You would give this sister discernment as she considers how to address these concerns. Grant her courage to speak the truth in love, but also wisdom to know how to do so without bringing harm to herself or her boyfriend. Father, we ask that You would soften the hearts of those in leadership at this company, that they would recognize the need to treat all employees with fairness and compassion, especially those with medical conditions. Protect her job, Lord, and shield her from any retaliation. We also pray for her boyfriend, that You would strengthen him in this difficult time and provide for his needs. Above all, Lord, we ask that You would draw both of them closer to You and help them to honor You in their relationship. May they seek Your will in all things and pursue a godly marriage if that is Your plan for them. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
We also want to gently remind you that your ultimate trust must be in the Lord, not in your job or even in your own efforts to bring about justice. Psalm 56:3-4 says, "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in You. In God, I praise His word. In God, I put my trust. I will not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?" No matter what happens, God is your provider and protector. If you do move forward with contacting HR, do so with a spirit of humility and a willingness to accept whatever outcome the Lord allows, trusting that He is in control.
Lastly, we encourage you to examine your relationship with this man in light of Scripture. If your courtship is not leading toward marriage, it may be wise to step back and seek the Lord’s guidance on whether this relationship is honoring to Him. Pray for clarity and ask God to reveal His will for both of your lives. If marriage is the goal, then proceed with purity and intentionality, keeping Christ at the center of your relationship. If not, it may be time to surrender this relationship to the Lord and trust Him to lead you both in separate paths that honor Him.
